ADJECTIVES
 An adjective is used to modify a
noun or pronoun
 To describe the noun or pronoun or
make its meaning more definite
ADJECTIVES
 by telling what kind: yellow flower,
large building, fast car, useless venture
 by pointing out which one: my house,

his sister, this room, whose pen
 by telling how much or how many:

both hands, several minutes, enough
rope, more time
ADJECTIVES
 They can appear on their own without a
noun after some verbs: be, look, seem,
appear, become, get
EX: That seems fun.

It’s getting cold.
ADJECTIVES
 Some adjectives like alive, alike,
ashamed, alone, asleep, awake,
afraid, can only be used after be,
seem, appear to, look
EX: He is alone.
She looks ashamed.
It seems alive.
ORDER OF ADJECTIVES
GRADABLE ADJECTIVES
 Adjectives which describe qualities that can
be measured in degrees, such as size,
beauty, age, etc. are called gradable
adjectives
 They can be used in comparative or
superlative forms
EX:
My teacher was very happy with my
homework.
He said that France was a little cold.
GRADABLE ADJECTIVES
 Adverbs that can be used with gradable
adjectives:
a little, dreadfully, extremely, fairly,

hugely, immensely, intensely, rather,
reasonably, slightly, unusually, very
NON-GRADABLE ADJECTIVES
NON-GRADABLE ADJECTIVES
 Adverbs that can be used with non-
gradable adjectives
 Really, absolutely
Example:
 It was absolutely freezing outside.
 The performance was really wonderful.
