ENVIRONMENTAL

LITERACY
An individual’s
understanding, skills and
motivation to make
responsible decisions that
considers his or her
relationships to natural
systems, communities and
future generations.
Have you ever dreamt of becoming a key
player in making your society a healthier
and safer place to live in?
The environment, it’s also the
air, the water and the food we
consume

Recovery
What can I reduce?

We must reduce waste

production at the source. This
means reducing the quantity of
waste during production,
distribution, purchasing, use
and elimination
Reduce
Reducing waste is the most important
thing we can do. By reducing waste,
we avoid the unnecessary use of
resources such as materials, energy
and water. It means there is less
waste to manage.
HOW CAN WE REDUCE WASTE?
1.Buy reusable items rather than
disposable ones.

Cloth napkins (washable) instead of

paper napkins (disposable)

Cloth or strainer coffee filters

(washable) instead of paper filters
(disposable)

Eliminate throw-away razors,

lighters, non-rechargeable batteries,
etc.
2.Take a reusable shopping bag with you so
you don't have to use a paper or plastic bag
from the shop.

3.Say ‘no’ to a plastic shopping bag when you

only have a couple of items.

4.Choose products that use less packaging

5.Stick a "no junk mail" sign on your letter

box

6.Take your lunch to school in a reusable

container.

7. In terms of transportations walking and

bicycling is the best thing you can do if you
only go to near places.
Reuse

The next most important thing we can do is

reuse waste material. That way it doesn't
go in the rubbish and end up in the landfill.
It also means you don't have to buy a new
product. That saves you money and saves
the energy and resources that would have
been used to make the new product.
How can we reuse waste?
1.Give unwanted toys and books to hospitals or
schools.
2.Put unwanted clothes in used clothing bins.
3.Use plastic containers for freezing or storing food
items.
4.Save wrapping paper and boxes to use again.
5.Use old jars for storage.
6.Take old magazines to your local doctor's or
dentist's surgery.
7.Shop at second hand stores or use online trading
websites to buy items that are unwanted by others.
8.Take household items to your council’s resource
recovery centre.
9.Make memo pads out of waste paper.
10.Re-use envelopes - purchase reuse labels.
Recycle

Recycling involves some form of

reprocessing of waste materials to
produce another product.
For example, recycling plastic bottles
to make buckets.
What can be recycled?

The main products that can

be recycled are paper,
cardboard, glass, aluminum,
tin and plastic containers.

Composting and worm farms

are methods of recycling
organic waste.
Recover

This is the recovery of waste without any

pre-processing.

Most of the materials thrown in the garbage can be

used and processed in ways other than being
destroyed. This is what is called recovering. Reusing,
recycling and composting (for food leftovers) are the
most frequently used methods for recovering waste.
When it’s not possible to reuse or recycle objects—
such as dead batteries, ink cartridges or cell phones,
which all contain toxic elements labeled hazardous
household waste—there is one last option before
throwing them away: scrap dealers, recycling
workers and recovers'.
For example, waste oils that
cannot be refined for reuse in
vehicles can be burnt for
energy recovery. Recovering
the energy from waste oil
reduces our dependence on
coal and imported oil.
