Solar 3

Here are the key differences between hydroelectric and solar energy systems: Hydroelectric Energy System: - Uses the power of flowing water (rivers, dams, etc.) to turn turbines and generate electricity. - Requires a suitable location with consistent water flow such as near waterfalls or rivers. - Initial setup cost is high due to civil works required for dams, tunnels, powerhouses etc. - Provides a reliable baseload power as water flow is generally consistent throughout the year. - Has low operational and maintenance costs once constructed. - Impact on local wildlife habitats and may require relocation of people. Solar Energy System: - Uses photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight directly into electricity.

Solar Energy

 Solar power is energy from the sun that is converted into thermal

or electrical energy.

 Solar technologies can harness this energy for a variety of uses,

including generating electricity, providing light or a comfortable
interior environment, and heating water for domestic, commercial,
or industrial use.
Solar power

 It is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using

photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar
power (CSP).

 Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and

tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small
beam.

 Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using

the photovoltaic effect
How can we study solar energy
Solar energy engineers are required to hold at least a bachelor's degree, typically in
mechanical or electrical engineering. Other areas of studies in which aspiring solar
energy engineers can specialize include chemistry, computer science, civil engineering, and
related fields, with concentrations in solar energy.
Uses of Solar energy

 As heat for making hot water, heating buildings and cooking.

 To generate electricity with solar cells or heat engines.

 To take the salt away from sea water.

 To use sun rays for drying clothes and towels.

 It is used by plants for the process of photosynthesis.

Where in pakistan solar energy is used

 The country has solar plants in Pakistani Kashmir, Punjab, Sindh

and Balochistan.

 Initiatives are under development by the International Renewable

Energy Agency, the Japan International Cooperation Agency,
Chinese companies, and Pakistani private
sector energy companies.
Solar Plants in Pakistan

 200 MW Solar PV Power Projects are installed 100 MW by

Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power (Pvt.) Ltd.

 200 MW is under construction (100 MW by M/s Best Green

Energy Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd.
The most Common Types of Solar Energy

Photovoltaic systems. One of the most common ways to use solar

power is to use photovoltaic systems or as they are also known solar
cell systems, which produce electricity directly from sunlight.
 Solar water heating systems.
 Solar power plants.
 Passive solar heating.
Advantages of Solar Energy
Renewable Energy Source. Among all the benefits of solar panels, the
most important thing is that solar energy is a truly renewable energy
source.
 Reduces Electricity Bills.
 Diverse Applications.
 Low Maintenance Costs.
 Technology Development.
 Cost.
 Weather Dependent.
 Solar Energy Storage Is Expensive.
 The environmental benefit of solar energy Solar energy creates
clean, renewable power from the sun and benefits the environment.

 Alternatives to fossil fuels reduce carbon footprint at home and

abroad, reducing greenhouse gases around the globe.

 Solar is known to have a favorable impact on the environment.

Positive Effects of Solar Energy

 Solar Energy on Earth.

 Solar Energy for Electricity.
 Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
 More Sustainable and Resilient.
 Versatile, Low-Maintenance and Flexible.
 Cost Advantages.
 Jobs in the Solar Sector.
 Human Health and Safety.
 Intensive energy supply – Solar power is one of the commodities
that tend to never run out.
 Clean and Safe – unlike other resources that create waste, solar
power is clean and safe.
 Seamless technology – the technology that drives solar energy
has become a standard.
 Limitless opportunities – due to solar rays being everywhere, the
solution of solar power is a practical solution in any city.
 Cheap- with the advent of mass production, the cost of
implementation is cheaper and a solution easily within grasp of
a common man.
Disadvantages of Solar Energy
 As the name implies, the solar energy is directly proportional to the
availability of sunshine. Solar energy cannot generate without
proper rays of sun.
 Warranty and testing of all solar systems to be run on frequent
intervals.
 Solar panels require ample space for build-out, hence, the need of
spacing is mandatory. If you require solar energy, but are limited to
having space for panels, then this can be a limitation.
 Solar Panels charge batteries that in turn power the solar devises.
This again requires space.
