This document discusses the role of language and information in society. It explains that language allows humans to understand and classify the natural world, and that the pursuit of knowledge occurs through communication. The development of technologies like mathematics, sailing vessels, and steam engines demonstrate how understanding nature's principles leads to scientific advances. The printing press enabled widespread information sharing. The modern digital world and technologies like the World Wide Web were built on these scientific and technological foundations and allow global information transmission, but also enable the spread of misinformation and risks to privacy and security that require vigilance.

Role of Language
• In the human quest for understanding the
natural world, the ability to name and
classify objects found in nature is the first
step of knowing and language has been
useful for that purpose
In using language, there is
process…

• And in this process, there is pursuit for knowledge.

• When talking to people, the meaning of a message
does not diminish by multiplication
• Words can function across space and time without
reducing their meaning
Mathematics as Language
of Nature
• Technology in the modern world is the fruit of
science

“Since people have discovered the laws and language

of nature, they can develop technology that uses
these laws and language for their benefits.”

• Example: Mathematics by Isaac Newton

Technological World
• The ability to think and conceptually comprehend
nature and the principles it follows eventually leads
to science

• Since the ancient times, people harnessed the

forces of nature after understanding them better

• Examples: Sailing vessel, fire, steam engine

The Printing Press and
Beyond
• The ancient fascination with language gave rise to
the preservation of the words of earlier people at
the same time when the West was weakened

• being informed was important and led to the

transmission of ideas through hand-copying
The Printing

creation of the
printing press
• Using this,

The Printing Press and

• In the age of information, the transmission of
ideas has undergone changes
• From rhetoric, it became digital
• A digital world is a direct offspring of the
progressing world of technology built upon
the many advances in science
The World Wide
Web
• Tim Berners-Lee – invented
the World Wide Web as a
way of addressing data
processing and information
sharing needs among
scientists for the European
Organization for Nuclear
Research
Why Create WWW?
• CERN’s atomic smasher produces a huge amount of
scientific data every second and requires better
data analyzers
The World Wide Web
• NeXT Computer was used by Sir Tim Berners-Lee
which became the first web server
The World Wide Web
• With the ease of sharing information, its reliability
becomes compromised
• Anyone with a connection to other people can
produce contents which are showing half-truths or
lies
The World Wide Web

scamming
It pays to be vigilant in utilizing these
modern devices at all times.
