COMPUTER SOFTWARE

A Computer is made up of many


hardware parts . These hardware parts need
instructions to work . A software is a set of
programs or set of instructions given to a
computer to make it work is called software .
WHY IS SOFTWARE NEEDED?
Without software a computer cannot
work . It enables us to interact with a
computer , its hardware or perform tasks .
Similarly , any software can be used only
when it is stored inside a storage device ,
i.e. a hardware . Hence both hardware and
software are equally important for a
computer.
We install and store many software inside
our computer so that we can use them
anytime.
TYPES OF SOFTWARE
There are two types of software :
1)System software .
i) Operating System. ii)Utility software.
2)Application software .
i)General purpose . Ii) Customized software
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
It controls the entire computer system including
the hardware . The system software also controls
and runs the application software . There are many
types of system software .
OPERATING SYSTEM(OS):- An Operating
System is a program that acts as an intermediate
between user of a computer and computer
hardware . It is the first software that is loaded into
computers main memory .Windows is the most
commonly used Operating System. Windows is a
product by Microsoft .
Windows has many versions, such as Windows XP. Windows
7, Windows 8, Windows 10. Some other examples of
operating systems are Linux, MS DOC, and Mac OS .
Utility Software:- This software is designed to
perform basic maintenance tasks on a
computer. Lets discuss some examples of this
software.

Antivirus Utility Software:- Viruses are


software created to destroy data and files on a
computer. Antivirus utility software detect and
remove viruses from the computer system.
Norton, McAfee and Quick Heal are most popular
antivirus software.
Backup Utility SW:- The ward backup means a
reserve or substitute. Backup utility
softwarekeeps a duplicate copy of our files in any
external storage device.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Application software helps us carry out a specific task.
There are two types of application software.
1)General purpose Application Software.
2)Customized Application Software .
General purpose Application Software:-
Some general software are designed that may
be used by individual users to suit their needs
and requirements such software are called
packages.
1)Word Processing Software:- They are
used to type , edit and format text. For
example, Microsoft Word, Word Pad,
Apache Open Office Writer , etc.
PRESENTATION SOFTWARE:-They let
us create presentations . For example ,
Microsoft Power point, Apache Open Office
Impress, etc.

Photo Editing Software:- They are used to


create , edit and manipulate images. For
example, Adobe Photoshop, Picasa, etc.
Spreadsheet Software:- They are used to
enter and maintain numbers, and solve
complex calculations. For example,
Microsoft Excel, Apache Open Office Calc,
etc.
Customized Application Software:-
These type of software are specific purpose
software designed for a specific organization or
a particular user. Customized application
software are also called as tailor-made software
. These are mainly used at railway stations,
airports, banks, malls, etc

Library Management Software:- These type of


software are used to manage record of books (entry ,
issue, return) in a library of a school or college.
Bill Generating Software:- Billing software
handles the sale and purchase of the products sold
to the customer in restaurants, departmental stores
hospitals, etc.
