Simplifying and Evaluating Algebraic Expressions: Looking Back

Solution B is correct. When evaluating expressions, you must substitute the given values for the variables and then simplify using the proper order of operations. Solution A does not show the work or substitution of values, so it is not clear if the correct process was followed. Solution B shows the step-by-step work of substituting the values for x and y and then simplifying according to PEMDAS, arriving at the right solution. Justifying the answer and showing the work is important when evaluating algebraic expressions.

expressions.

Recall the Terms:
A term is a number, a variable, or a
product or quotient of numbers and
variables raised to a powers.
The terms of the expression are
separated by addition or subtraction.
The numerical coefficient of a variable
term is the real number factor, while
the Literal Coefficient is the variable
part of a term including their exponent.
Consider the example: 5x  x  7
2

There are 3 terms in this example and

they are:

5x , x ,  7
2
Consider the example: 5x  x  7
2

The first term has coefficient of 5. The

second term has an unwritten
coefficient of 1.
The last term , -7, is called a constant
since there is no variable in the term.
