Precision in Pedagogy- what does it
mean?
Michael Fullan’s Coherence framework promotes synergy amongst members of
educational systems, encouraging members from the classroom to upper level,
decision making administration to work together towards common goals to have
the greatest positive impact on students ( pg. 88).
 Precision in Pedagogy is the understanding of intentional and purposeful
methodologies needed to not only instruct students but give them the
capabilities necessary to become active, accountable thinkers.
Precision works in coherence with Clarity of Learning Goals and Shift Practices
through Capacity Building to deepen learning and add depth to current
educational practices that may be lacking in engaging, intentional curriculum
design.

Precision and the West Pines
Language Arts Initiative

• Precision supports real-world application of curriculum

content in a manner that fosters enthusiastic, accountable
students who are interested in their own learning.
• Collaboration brings teachers together to consider current
system’s effectiveness and if more modern ideas are
necessary to prepare students for todays world ( Jacobs,
2010).
What is Deepening Learning?
• Deepening learning as it relates to precision is
the use of curriculum as a means to guide
student’s learning in ways that are engaging and
intentional. (Fullan, 2016)
• “When engaged in deeper learning, students think
critically and work with others effectively across
all subjects” (Briggs, 2017)

Unified View
• The article that really helped us to construct a unified
view of the process of developing an understanding of
learning is:
• 10 Innovative Learning Strategies for Modern
Pedagogy
• This article discusses modern pedagogy which relates to our topic
and also learning strategies to use within today’s modern world.
Additional Resources

that contributed to our understanding of deepening
learning are:

Teacher Reflection (Howard, 2003)
• This article helped us in our understanding of deepening learning
because it talked about creating culturally relevant teaching
strategies, a goal of pedagogy.
Potential Challenges Ahead
• Disconnect between interests, priorities, and values that are present between
educators
• A wide array of differences in the views of education, curriculum, and pedagogy
• Disagreement on the understanding of this element and its’ importance
• “Too many cooks in the kitchen”
• Individuals involved could be reluctant to step outside of their normal way of
thinking in terms of education
• Reluctant to change
• When people become comfortable, they become complacent
Questions for the Curriculum Coordinator

1. What are successful ways to implement precision in pedagogy into PLEs?

2. How do we as educators expose children to deepen their learning?

3. What can be done to support teachers in their pursuit of new ways to engage students?

4. What teaching practices can be used to promote critical thought and decision making skills with our students so they have a greater chance
of not only meeting standards but becoming successful thinkers?

5. How can the transition from more traditional methods of teaching to modern methods like deeper learning go as smooth as possible?

6. How effective can deeper learning and pedagogy in precision be on the students’ academic success in the long run?
Next Steps
• Some of the next steps could be:
• - Deepening our own learning as educators so that we are prepared to provide
our students with the best possible chance to learn.

• - Spreading awareness about making a positive change and impact on the

entire pedagogical system through cross curricular connections and
collaboration

• - Involving the students, parents, and community members in the process of

deepening the learning within the school
