Image Resolution, Sampling and Quantization

The document discusses three key concepts related to representing digital images: 1. Image resolution refers to the number of pixels that can be accommodated in a unit area, and is defined by the number of rows and columns in an image. 2. Sampling is the process of digitizing the coordinate value of each pixel and determines the spatial resolution of digitized images. 3. Quantization refers to digitizing the amplitude or pixel value and determines the number of gray levels in digitized images.

Image Resolution
The number of pixels that can be accommodated in unit
area.
For example.
If an image has M rows and N columns, then its resolution
can be defined as M X N.

Megapixels

Column pixels (width) X row pixels (height) / 1 Million.

Sampling
Digitizing the co-ordinate value is called sampling .

It determines the spatial resolution

of the digitized images.
Quantizati
on

Digitizing the
amplitude
value is
called
quantization.

It determines the number of grey

levels in the digitized images.
