Cardiovascular System
Crucial Diagnostic Test
1. Electrocardiograph ( EKG, ECG) The EKG is a graphic representation of the electrical activity of the heart in a non invasive procedure. It shows a three dimensional perspective of the electrical function of the heart. Common uses of the EKG 1. To measure the heart for a short time period, such as during a physical or an assessment 2. Ongoing monitoring using telemetry while the patient is an inpatient 3. Ambulatory monitoring for a 24 hours period while the patient goes about normal daily activity 4. Stress test 2. Cardiac Chaterization (Angiography) • This is an invasive procedure used to examine the coronary arteries and intracardiac structures, as well as to measure cardiac output, intracardiac pressures, and oxygenation 3. Echocardiograph • An ultrasound of the heart provides a noninvasive examinationof intracardiac structures and blood flow
How does the test work ?
Sound waves are directed to and deflected by the heart, causing and echo that is detected by the echocardiograph, which is interprered by the physician. 4. Nuclear cardiology These test determine myocardial perfusion and contractility of the heart, ischemia, infarction, wall motion, and ejection fraction.
How does the test work ?
Radioisotopes are injected through the IV. The radiation detector monitors the flow of the radioisotope as it flow through the heart. 6. Hemodynamic monitoring Hemodynamic monitoring measure cardiac output and intracardiac pressure. What to do ? • Check for bleeding at venipuncture site Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) This determine the patient’s ventilation, tissue oxygenation and acid- base status
