Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

This document provides examples and instructions for adding and subtracting polynomials. It explains that polynomials can be added or subtracted by combining like terms, which are terms that have the same variables raised to the same powers. It includes 4 examples of adding and subtracting monomials, as well as examples of adding two polynomials together by grouping like terms. The document emphasizes that polynomials can be added in either vertical or horizontal form by aligning or grouping like terms. It concludes with a "Time to Polynomialize!" quiz and homework assignment related to adding and subtracting polynomials.

7-6 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Adding Polynomials
Mr. Peter Richard
went to Poly- Nomial’s house to visit
her Ma-Nomial who had a son,
Bi-Nomial. Bi-Nomial had a son called
Tri-Nomial, but don’t ask me how this
happened. Mr. Peter Richard obtained
very valuable information about how the
Nomials function. He passes this secret
knowledge unto you free of charge.

7-6 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Just as you can perform operations on

numbers, you can perform operations on
polynomials. To add or subtract
polynomials, combine like terms.

Remember!
Like terms are constants or terms with the same
variable(s) raised to the same power(s).

Polynomials can be added in either vertical or

horizontal form. (5x2 + 4x + 1) + (2x2 + 5x + 2)
In vertical form, align In horizontal form, use the
the like terms and add: Associative and
Commutative Properties to
regroup and combine like

terms.
+ 2x2 + 5x + 2
7x2 + 9x + 3
(5x2 + 4x + 1) + (2x2 + 5x + 2)
= (5x2 + 2x2) + (4x + 5x) + (1 + 2)
= 7x2 + 9x + 3
