COUNTER

Synchronous counters use a clock signal to change state and consist of flip flops connected to the same clock. They are used for applications like timers, cameras, and parking controls. A 4-bit synchronous counter contains 4 JK flip flops and a clock input. There are up and down synchronous counters. In up counters, the flip flops toggle based on preceding outputs being high. Synchronous counters operate in parallel without propagation delays, allowing higher frequencies than asynchronous counters, but are more complex to design as the number of states increases.

SYNCRONOUS COUNTERS

PRESENTED BY PANDIT ARYAN,

PATEL DHAIRYA,SHAH YASH
WHAT ARE SYNCRONOUS
COUNTERS AND USES
• The counters which use clock signal to change their
transition are called “Synchronous counters”. This
means the synchronous counters depends on their
clock input to change state values. In synchronous
counters, all flip flops are connected to the same
clock signal and all flip flops will trigger at the same
time.
• Uses of syncronous counters
• Some common uses and application of
synchronous counters are follow: Alarm Clock, Set
AC Timer, Set time in camera to take the picture,
flashing light indicator in automobiles, car parking
control etc. Counting the time allotted for special
process or event by the scheduler.
STRUCTURE OF SYNCRONOUS COUNTERS
• A 4 BIT SYNCRONOUS COUNTERS CONSIST OF 4 JK
FLIP FLOP
AND A CLOCK WHICH IS GIVEN TO EACH INPUT
*THERE ARE TWO TYPE OF SYNCRONOUS COUNTERS
1) UP SYNCRONOUS COUNTER

2) DOWN SYNCRONOUS COUNTER

WORKING OF SYNCRONOUS COUNTER
• the external clock pulses (pulses to be counted) are fed directly to each of
the J-K flip-flops in the counter chain and that both the J and K inputs are
all tied together in toggle mode, but only in the first flip-flop, flip-
flop FFA (LSB) are they connected HIGH, logic “1” allowing the flip-flop to
toggle on every clock pulse. Then the synchronous counter follows a
predetermined sequence of states in response to the common clock signal,
advancing one state for each pulse.
• The J and K inputs of flip-flop FFB are connected directly to the output Q A of
flip-flop FFA, but the J and K inputs of flip-flops FFC and FFD are driven from
separate AND gates which are also supplied with signals from the input and
output of the previous stage. These additional AND gates generate the
required logic for the JK inputs of the next stage.
• If we enable each JK flip-flop to toggle based on whether or not all
preceding flip-flop outputs (Q) are “HIGH” we can obtain the same counting
sequence as with the asynchronous circuit but without the ripple effect,
since each flip-flop in this circuit will be clocked at exactly the same time.
• Then as there is no inherent propagation delay in synchronous counters,
because all the counter stages are triggered in parallel at the same time,
the maximum operating frequency of this type of frequency counter is
much higher than that for a similar asynchronous counter circuit.
