Point Slope Form

1) Point-slope form is written as y - y1 = m(x - x1), where m is the slope and (x1, y1) is a given point on the line. 2) To write an equation in point-slope form, identify the slope m and a point (x1, y1), then substitute them into the point-slope form equation. 3) To convert from point-slope form to slope-intercept form, use algebraic manipulation like distribution and combining like terms.

Point-Slope Form

Linear Equations in
Two Variables
What we Know so far….

Slope Intercept Form:

y = mx + b

Where m is the slope and b

Point- Slope Form

Point- Slope form is:

y  y1  m( x  x1 )
Where m is the slope
and (x1, y1) is the
given point

Slope – Intercept Form

A linear equation written in the form
y – y1 = m(x – x1) is in point-slope form.
The graph of this equation is a line with slope m
passing through the point (x1, y1).

Plot the point, then rise & run from there….

Example: Write the point-slope form for the equation of the
line through the point (-2, 5) with a slope of 3.

Use the point-slope form, y – y1 = m(x – x1), with m = 3 and

(x1, y1) = (-2, 5).
y – y1 = m(x – x1)

y – 5 = 3(x – (-2)) Let m = 3, let (x1, y1) = (-2, 5).

y – 5 = 3(x + 2) Simplify into point-slope form
