Probability of A Union of Two Events

The document discusses probability of unions of two events. It defines key terms like experiment, sample space, simple event, and compound event. It then provides an example of calculating the probability of getting a head when tossing a coin once. The probability is 1/2 or 50% since the sample space is {Head, Tail} and the event is getting a Head. It also gives an example of a compound event being getting a 3 or 5 when rolling a die once, which consists of two simple events.

Probability of a union of two

Events
TERMS TO REMEMBER:
Experiment

• Activities which could be repeated over and

over again and which will have defined results.
– Examples:
» Rolling a die, tossing coin and randomly choosing a ball
from a box.
Sample Space
• set of all outcomes in an
experiment
–Example: (tossing a coin 3
times)
»Sample space =
(Heads,Heads,tails)
EVENT
• Subset of sample space
2 types of Events
• Simple Event

• Compound Event
Simple Events
• Events
where one experiment happens at a
time and it will be having a single outcome

• P(E)=
• P(E)=
Example
• What
is the probability of getting head in tossing a
coin once.
• Sample space=( Head, Tail)
• Event =getting head
• P(E)=
=
Therefore the probability of getting head in tossing a
coin once is 50% or ½
Take note;:Probability will on line between zero and 1
Compound Event
• Events which consists of more than one
outcome.
• Consists of 2 or more simple events
• Example: What is the probability of getting 3
and 5 in rolling a die.
TRY!
• Rolling a die. A die is rolled once. Let A be the
event of showing an even number and B be
the event of showing a prime number. List
down all the elements of A and B. Represent
in Venn Diagram the intersection and union of
events if applicable.
Answer
• A  =
• B=

• (A U B)=
• (
• A’=
• Universal set =
