Introduction :-
 Oil circuit breaker such type circuit breaker which used as a dielectric
or insulating medium for arc extinction.

 In oil circuit breaker the contact of breaker are made to separate with
in an insulating oil.

 When the fault occure in system, the contact of CB are open under the
insulating oil, and an arc is developed between them and the heat of
arc is evaporated in the surrounding oil.
Construction:-
 It consists of current carrying contact enclosed in a strong, metal tank
and the tank is filled with transformer oil.

 The oil is act as an arc extinguishing medium between two contact.

 At the top of oil, air is filled in the tank which act as a cushion to
controll the displacement of oil on the time of arc evaporation.

 It securely bolted for carrying out the vibration caused on interrupting

of very high current.
Construction:- (Continue)
 It is the basic structural diagram of OCB.
Working principle :-
 When fault occure in the system, the contact of breaker are moving apart,
and an arc is stuck between the contact.

 Due to arc, large amount of heat is produced, and a very high temperature
is reached which vaporise the surrounding oil into gas.

 The gas is produced surrounds the arc and it explosive growth arround it
displace the oil.

 The arc is extinguished when distance between two contact are reaches a
certain critical value.
Feature of OCB:-
 It is very reliable in operation and it very cheap.

 The most important feature is that no special device are used for
controlling of arc
Advantages :-
 Oil has a high dielectric strength.

 Oil used in CB provides a small clearance between the conductor and

earth component.

 The hydrogen gas formed in tank which is has a high diffusion and
good cooling propoties.
Disadvantages :-
 Oil used in CB is inflammable and hence cause of fire.

 Due to decomposition of oil, the carbon particle generated which

polluted the oil.

 Due to polluted oil its dielectric strength is decreased.

Maintenance:-
 Checking of oil and replacement of oil from the CB after each
operation. Because after the interruption of s.c. current the carbon
particle are formed in oil which cause the decrease of dielectric
strength of oil.

 Check the oil level.

 Clean the surface and removing carbon deposits with a strong and dry
fabric in bushes.
