Water Polo
A team water sport involving six players and
a goalkeeper. The game is usually played in a designated area of swimming pool, but can also be played in lakes and streams. The object of water polo is to score goals. Water polo players swim and tread water while passing the ball and depending their teammates, with the aim of moving the ball into the net defended by a goalie. The team with the most scored goals wins. The game is divided into four periods of varying lengths depending on the level of play, with short breaks in between. The home team wears numbered blue caps, the visiting team white numbered caps and the goalies wear red caps. Water Polo literally means "Water ball". Polo comes from the Indian "pulu" which means "ball". In its objective, water polo is similar to Rugby, American football, and soccer.
The history of water polo dates to
late nineteenth century Scotland, and its invention is the work of swim instructor William Wilson. Water polo quickly became a popular pastime in Scotland and Britain, and was one of the first team sports involved at the international Modern Olympus. The first game in the history of water polo is said to have been played "along the banks of the River Dee" in Aberdeen, Scotland. Men's water polo was among the first team sports introduced at the Modern Olympic games in 1900. Water polo is now popular in many countries around the world, notably Europe (particularly in Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Russia, Italy, Greece and Spain), the United States, Canada and Australia. Positions There are thirteen players on a water polo team, although only seven are allowed in the water during a match. The positions are: - Center forward - Driver - Flat - Hole Set Defender - Point - Wing Water Polo Equipment Water polo pool - a pool specific for water polo, or a swimming pool with marked lanes. Goals - the goals are 3 meters wide. Ball - the water polo ball comes in two sizes - men have a size 5 (circumference 0.7m. or 28 inches) and women a size 4 (circumference 0.65m. or 26.5 inches) Goggles - use for eye protection. Rules and Regulations ✓ 6 "Field" Players and 1 Goalie start the game ✓ Field Players must pass, catch and shoot with only 1 hand ✓ Taking the ball under water when guarded is a turnover ✓ The official playing field is at least 25 yards long, 20 yards wide and 7 feet deep ✓ Players may not touch the bottom or hang on the wall Safety Precautions for Playing Water Polo ✓ Strictly observe the rules of the game. ✓ Work at improving your form. ✓ Wear appropriate protective equipment, such as a cap with ear guards and a mouth guard. ✓ Clip your fingernails and toenails short. ✓ Wear water-resstart 30+ (or higher) sunscream when playing outside.
