ClorTec® Basic Reaction
Salt + Water + Electrical Energy = Sodium Hypochlorite + Hydrogen
NaCl + H2O + 2E = NaOCl + H2

For each kg. equivalent of Cl2: Site-specific water quality and temperature
factored into design
Salt (NaCl) 3 kg
Ensures system operation at optimum
Softened Water 125 litres
conditions, maximizing electrode life
Electrical energy 4.4 kWh and delivering the highest quality
water
For each kilogram of Cl2 equivalent produced
Guaranteed 0.8% solution strength
125 litres of 0.8% concentration sodium
hypochlorite
1/35 kg. of H2 gas produced

11
De Nora Water Technologies
Softened Water Requirements
Softened Water
Inlet Water Temperature: between 11˚C - 18˚C
Inlet Water Pressure: Minimum 1.4 bar (2.8 bar for HCT-600 and larger), maximum 3.5 bar
Must be free of polymer additives, flocculants, coagulants and antiscalants
pH 6.5 to 8.5
Hardness [Ca/Mg] < 10 ppm (at outlet of water softener)
Total organic content < 1 ppm
Iron <200 ppb
Manganese <10 ppb
Nickel <5 ppm
Fluoride <2 ppm
Copper <5 ppb

ClorTec® Generation Process

Influent water passes through water softener to reduce hardness

Reduces scaling of electrodes and lengthens intervals between cleanings
Using softened water, salt is dissolved and forms concentrated brine solution
Diluted brine solution passed through electrolytic cell that uses DC current from a rectifier
Electrolyzes diluted brine into a 0.8% solution of sodium hypochlorite
0.8% hypochlorite solution flows into storage tank
Hydrogen is safely vented to the atmosphere

ClorTec® Control Description

Fully automated batch process prompted by storage tank level

System operation only allowed if the following conditions are true
Hydrogen Dilution System is in operation
All valves and switches are in the “run” position
Transformer/rectifier is providing the correct output
If the system sees a problem, then an alarm is generated to alert the operator
