Human Tissues

Structure and Function of the Human Body

Objectives
• Compare and contrast the function and
characteristics of the four tissue types
• Identify the location of epithelial tissue within
the human body
• Identify the various types of connective tissue
• Identify the various types and location of
muscle tissue
• Identify and describe the function of the cells
found within nerve tissue

Tissues
• There are four types of tissues
– Epithelial
– Connective
– Muscular
– Nervous
• Each have specific functions
• Commonly an organ contains all four tissues
types

Epithelial Tissue
• Epithelial tissue contains cells that are tightly
packed together
• Little to no extracellular matrix space
• Located on the body’s surface (outer layer of
skin), lines the body’s cavities (esophagus,
bladder)

Epithelial Tissue
• Epithelial tissue is classified on cell shape and
number of cell layers
• Cell shape: Squamous, cuboidal, columnar
• Cell layers: Simple or stratified
• For example
– Simple cuboidal epithelial
– Stratified squamous epithelial

Epithelial Tissue

Connective Tissue
• Connective tissue is the most widespread and
diverse type of tissue
• Commonly there is a lot of matrix space within
connective tissue
– Various substances found in the matrix space that
help regulates the function of the tissue
• There are four types of connective tissue
– Fibrous connective tissue
– Cartilage
– Bone
– Blood
2/20/2020 7
Connective Tissue
• There are three common types of fibers that
can be found in connective tissue matrix space
• Collagenous fibers
– Most abundant type, structural support, strong
• Reticular fibers
– Like a sponge, helps to fill space
• Elastic fibers
– Flexible and can bend and stretch like a
rubberband

2/20/2020 8
Fibrous Connective Tissue
• There are two types of fibrous connective
tissue
• Loose connective tissue
– Areolar
– Adipose
– Reticular
• Dense connective tissue
– Mainly compacted collagen fibers
– Tendons and ligaments

2/20/2020 9
Cartilage
• Composed of chondrocytes that have a lot of
matrix space that is flexible
– Matrix space and substances give cartilage its
characteristic
– Little blood flow
• Three types of cartilage
– Hyaline
– Elastic
– Fibrocartilage

Bone
• Bone is a type of connective tissue and
contains osteocytes
• There is a lot of matrix space which is filled
with calcium phosphate salt and collagen
fibers
• Gives bone it’s hard but yet slightly flexible
characteristic

Blood
• Blood is unique tissue because it is a fluid
• The blood cells are the cells of this tissue
– Red blood cells
– White blood cells
– Plasma
• Blood plasma is the matrix

Muscular Tissue
• The cells of muscle tissue are unique because
they can go through contraction
• Little to no matrix space
• Three types of muscle tissue
– Skeletal muscle
– Smooth muscle
– Cardiac muscle

2/20/2020 14
Nervous Tissue
• Nerve cells have a very unique shape and size
• Conduct electrical impulses as a form of
communication within the body
• The matrix space is filled with support cells
referred to neuroglia cells
