ORIGIN

1571 - “samtoy” or “ sao mi toy” literally meant


“our language”.

1572 - “YLOCOS” by Spaniards.

Wedding:

• Panagpudno - formal announcement to the


soon-to-be bride’s parents made by the groom.

• Bitor - Guests contribute cash to the newly


wed’s by dropping money or pinning bills to the
couples clothes.

Death:
• To announce a death of a family member, a
piece of a long wood is lit in front of the
deceased’s house. It is kept burning after the
burial. The fire is extinguished with white wine.

• Those who attended the burial in the cemetery,


must return to the deceased’s house by taking
different route/s from the one they’ve taken to get
there.

• Pamulinawen, Laoag city, Feb. 10
- a floral parade and street dancing festival.

• Guling-guling, Paoay, eve of ash Wednesday


- Residents dressed in their Ilocano costume
adorned with antique jewelries. Dancing and
singing around town while being blessed with
the sign of the cross using pounded rice
instead of gray ash.

decor competition ending in the palarong
pamasko.

Farmers festival, Baccara.


- This festival highlights a street dance parade
participated by dressed up farmers with their
products, agro-industrial, trade fair, contest of

Culture

The native Ilocano is a weaver, wood crafter and a


pottery expert.

They also has a exotic cuisine dishes like “Abu-os” or


“Ant Eggs” to “Dinengdeng” or vegetable broth
and “poqui-poqui” or Eggplant salad.

- Every 1st week of May, Vigan featuring
painting and product exhibits, a calesa parade and

ORIGIN

• Thus on October 29, 1849, Governor General Claveria


signed the proposal to unite the Pangasinan-Ilokos-
Cordillera areas into a new province called La Union.
• For 124 days, high and important Spanish colonial
officers studied and deliberated on the proposition to
create La Union or not.
• On March 2, 1850, Governor General Antonio Maria
Blanco signed the Superior Decreto that founded La
Union.

• During Spanish times, there were 2 settlement called
“San Vicente de Balanac” and “San Guillermo de
Dalangdang”.

• San Vicente de Balanac was near the coast, during


summer, when the sea was calm, pirates plunder the
settlement. Taking the womens and children, Leaving
a trail of blood.

• San Guillermo de Dalangdang was located at the
foothill of the cordillera mountains. During summer
when the fruit trees (some call it fire trees) were in
bloom, the populace was attacked by the
headhunters who saw the red flowers of the trees,
a sign that of the gods asking for human offering.

• In 1759, Augustinian priest father Jose Torres,


convinced the two settlements to come together
to a place not so near from the sea and forest so
they will not be plagued by their annual
problems. A place where they can dry fish and
called the place as “Pindangan”. They build a
church with San Guillermo the Hermit as their
patron.

• In 1765, the newly assigned priest named Father


San Fernando Rey, changed the name of
Pindangan to San Fernando.

• The church was destroyed by an earthquake and


decided to not rebuild it, instead, they chose a
new place for it and its known now as St. William
the hermit of the diocese of San Fernando.

Dinengdeng Festival
- This is a festival associated with the much-loved
Ilocano Culinary dish that is famous like pinakbet and
bagnet.

Feast of Our Lady of Caysasay. The Filipino-Chinese


community in San Fernando celebrates the Feast of Our
Lady by bringing the original statue from Taal, Batangas
to the temple for the weeklong activities held on the
second week of September which is the 5th day of
August in the Lunar calendar.

Tabacco Festival.
- This is a celebration where it genuinely promotes
the resilience and hardship of the Ilocano farmers. This
native crop has been strongly embedded in the area’s
culture and heritage.

Origin

“Pang” means “for” and “asin” means “salt” –


pangasinan means “Place for/of Salt”.
People

The western portion of the province is part of the


homeland of the Sambal people, while the
central and eastern portions are the homeland of
the Pangasinan People. Due to ethnic
migration, Ilocano people have settled in some
areas of the province.

• People here practiced anito worship, anito was believed
to be a god or divine spirit in nature and natural
phenomena.

• Mana – a divine power or vital or spiritual essence of every


being and everything that exist.

• Their beliefs are similar to Shamanist and Animist.

• Their temples and altars are dedicated to Ama Kaoley


and Ama Gaolay.

• Pangasinenses also noted for their Buri hat (Straw hat),


mat weaving, wooden shoes, bricks, pottery and
metalcraft.

Death:

• CALASIAO, Pangasinan - Dressed in burial clothes and


veils and holding lighted candles, a group of residents
in central Pangasinan, called “cantores,” would
gather on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day and go
from house to house, singing the song “Pantawtawag”
(Calling).
After the last stanza is sung, the singers are ushered
into the house and offered the usual fare, such as
“inlubi” (black rice cakes), fried rice flakes with
caramel and other native rice cakes.

The Pangasinan Christmas aligondo, or carol, is made up
of 142 quatrains and is believed to be the longest

- Pangasinans treasure the image of Christ known as


Divino Tesoro of Calasiao and celebrate the image with an
annual festival from April 24 to May 2.

• Binoyugan dance.
- A dance originated from ilokano region, it features women
balancing a clay pot or banga on their head.

• Binasuan dance, Bamyambang.


- Shows off the balancing skills of the dancers gracefully, and
yet, carefully.

• Oasiwas,Lingayen.
- Celebrated by the fisherman of Lingayen. By drinking and
dancing, circling and swinging while balancing a lighted oil
lamp on their head.
