This document discusses designing a campus network. It notes that internet has become an important part of daily life and campus networks must consider budget, security, management and performance. It then outlines specific needs for the campus like providing internet access to teachers, students and for managing operations. It proposes a hierarchical network design to efficiently and securely connect buildings on campus like the main building, library, auditorium and hostels. This design separates the network into core, distribution and access layers to improve scalability, performance, security and manageability of the campus network. The document aims to create a compact, budget-effective and secure campus network infrastructure that is reliable and adaptable.

Internet has become an important part of our
lifestyle. With the constant development of
computer network, the designing and planning of a campus network are very essential. We have to take care of several aspects such as budget, security, management, and overall performance of the network. To provide high speed and uninterrupted internet connectivity. Internet access to teachers for e-learning and research work. Keeping the network secure as it has data related to teacher’s research as well as files related to teaching. Internet access to manage the publishing of result. Limited internet access to students. Keep the network adaptable to any changes in the future There are different buildings in a campus and all have different usage of internet. The areas where we require various access points are: Main Building Library Auditorium Hostel Cafeteria Hierarchical network design provides efficient, fast and logical traffic forwarding patterns for enterprise network topologies while minimizing the cost of connecting multiple devices at network endpoints. It is easy to design and implement. Better performance . Better management and troubleshooting in case of network trouble. The hierarchical model has 3 layers Core layer Distribution layer Access layer The access layer is interfaces with the end devices such as PCs, printers, mobile phones, to provide access to the rest of the network. The main purpose is to provide a means of connecting devices to network and also controlling devices which are allowed to communicate. The Distribution layer devices control access to resources that are available at the core layer and must therefore use bandwidth efficiently, provides redundant connections for access devices. Also it connects network services to the access layer and implements policies for QoS, security, traffic loading, and routing. The core layer is the backbone of the network, it is critical for interconnectivity between distribution layer devices, hence it is important for core to be highly available. It is connected to the internet resources and hence should be capable of forwarding large amounts of data quickly. Network architecture and its security are necessary for any organization. If we tend to follow the hierarchic network design, network will be scalable, performance and security are increased, and therefore the network a simple to take care of. During this work, I attempted to create a compact budget effective secure campus network design based on the different requirements. This proposed network infrastructure is reliable and with adaptable infrastructure.
