ONLINE PLATFORMS FOR ICT

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT
There are many places to go, many
books to read, many experiences
to share, but with limited time and
capability, we keep all these things
alone. Information and
Communications Technology
opens many doors to all
possibilities, we can share all our
experiences across the globe, and
we can create our own “online
platform”
WHAT IS AN ONLINE PLATFORM?

◇ An online platform is a technology using the

Internet for designing and developing
learning tools for teaching business ideas
and strategy. Also, it is an online
marketplace that places one party in touch
with another, like E-commerce where buyers
and sellers meet.

BLOGGING PLATFORMS
◇ Websites like Wordpress, Tumblr and Blogger focus on

content and design. It typically looks like a newsletter

where users are given options to change the design to
what they like. The customization of the blog is
unrivaled depending on the content management

◇ Is a computer application that supports the creation and

modification of digital content. It is often used to

support multiple users working in collaborative
environment. Content can be simple text, photos, music,
video, documents, or just about anything you can think.
A major advantage of using CMS is that it requires
almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage, since
it manages all your content.

◇ WordPress is an example of content management

system that allows are to create and publish content on

the web. Although it is mostly used for web publishing,
it can be used to manage content on an intranet, or in a
single computer. It allows users to have full control over
the files, documents, as well as the design and display
of the content.

Evaluating online
platform
Evaluating online platform
◇ Many platform can be found on Internet. But
selecting one of them should take time to look
over the kind of quality control that the
platforms offer; of course many of them are
not regulated in anyway. The burden in
determining the value of information found on
the internet is on the user itself. These are some
criteria for evaluating online resources.

11
Evaluating online platform

1. Accuracy
◇ Is the website well-researched and information
properly cited?
◇ Are facts and figures documented?
◇ Can the information be verified in other sources?
◇ Is the page well written and organized?

12
Evaluating online platform

2. Authority
◇ Can you identify the author of the website? An author
can be an individual, company, educational institution,
government agency, or non-profit organization
◇ What are the qualifications or credentials of the
author?

13
Evaluating online platform

3. Objectivity
◇ Are there biases in the web page?
◇ Are the goals or aims of the author clearly stated?

14
Evaluating online platform

4. Currency
◇ Is there a date when the website was last updated?
◇ Are the links from the site up-to-date?

15
Evaluating online platform

5. Coverage
◇ How does the information compare with other sources
available on the topic?
◇ Are there references or link to information?

16
Evaluating online platform

6. Relevancy
◇ The website may be cool, but is the content
appropriate for your research needs?

17
What is a web page and
a website?
Web page
◇ Creating an online platform needs artistry and
creativity to effectively communicate messages.
◇ The World Wide Web (www) is then made up of web
pages. A web page is a file of information that can be
accessed and displayed on the computer. When going
to a certain website, accessing a file on a server and
the information in that file is being displayed on the
computer. Surfing on the web is accessing bunch of
computers that are connecting and transferring files
from computer to computer

What is a website?

◇ Basically, a website is a collection of web pages stored

on a particular computer (called web server) and
accessed by outside computer. The site creator puts the
files on the web server. A web server is just a computer
with special software that allows others to view your
web page when they go to the address of the web
server.

22
What is a web browser?
What is a web browser?
◇ A web browser is software on the computer that you
used to access web pages on websites. All computers
include at least one web browsers as part of the pre-
installed software. A web browser is a tool used to view
websites and more often it is also a tool to help create
websites or online platforms.

◇ It is important before beginning to build a website to

have some idea of the whole project.
◇ Building a website is a process that doesn’t have to skip
one process because these steps are the foundation in
building it.

28
Website creation process
1. Planning the Website
◇ All endeavors should start with planning. Plan out the

steps needed to complete the project. By making plans

and decisions early on, you will find that the later steps
in the process are easier and seem more guided.
THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME TINGS THAT NEEDED TO
DECIDE
◇ Why am I building this website?

◇ What are the website’s goals?

◇ What tools will be used to build the website

29 ◇ Who do I want to visit my website?

Website creation process
2. Designing the website
◇ There are many ways to design a website as there are
ideas for content and designers building the sites.
Design is more than just graphics. It also includes the
way the pages are organized, the buttons or links that
enable the site visitor to get those pages (navigation
elements), and the technical details
◇ The key to creating an excellent website is taking a
unique content and matching it to an excellent design.

30
Website creation process

3. Building the website

◇ Building is the actual work of creating pages, editing
graphics, making links, managing multimedia, and
adding scripts and other elements. Luckily, there are
websites covering the creation tools, graphics tools, and
other utilities that enable you to quickly create single
page for online platform.

31
Website creation process

4. Testing the website

◇ Testing the website is the appreciation of the job and
the design. Before other people visit the website, it is
needed to ensure that everything on the website works.
Navigation, graphics, and content should be tested and
retested regularly.

32
Website creation process

5. Promoting and maintaining the website

◇ After planning, designing, building and testing the
website, it is ready to send it out into the world. This is
not the end of the story, though, it needs to promote the
website to others, make sure it appears on the search
engines and promote it to the people. Also it needs to
maintain and update the site so that people have the
reason to comeback to it.

33
Website creation process
SOME TIPS
1. Study other websites
◇ Before starting web pages take a close look at some of

the famous websites. Determine what the content and

consider how ideas can turn to web pages.
2. Put important information first
◇ Always display the most important information at the

top of each page. Some users will not scroll through a

web page to read all the information.

34
Website creation process
3. Transfer speed
◇ In creating web pages, try to keep the file size of the
pages and images as small as possible. This will speed
up the display of the web pages by reducing the time
it takes for the information to transfer from the server
to the browser. Resizing image in Web Builder does not
make them smaller in size, so use image editor in
resizing the image to correct size
4. Test your website to different browsers
◇ Sometimes when a page looks good in one browser, it
35
might not be displayed the same in other browsers.
Elements of a website
content
◇ Content is the meat of the website, this is the reason
why users visit the site. The content should be unique
and excellent with the best practices in developing the
website.
◇ Content of the website should be personal. Having a
personality, and they will be interested in what the site
is saying. If it is a business site, then inject the
personality of the business into the content
◇ Content of the website should be high quality. Take pride
in putting anything out there. Make sure that the content
is well-written and is free from mistakes.
37
content
◇ Content of the website should be unique. Be an innovator.
Even if that is reposting what someone else has posted,
tell them what it is all about.

38
Parts of a web page
Parts of a webpage
◇ This section covers some of the standard parts of a web
page design. These parts are different from content.
They provide containers of the content. Not every web
page has all these elements, but a good web page has
most of them.

40
Parts of a webpage
1. Title. The title of the web page appears in the title
bar of the browser displaying the web page. It might
be something to overlook, but it can be very
important. This is how the page is identified.
2. Header. The header of a web page is the area that
spans the top of the page. There is no set size to this,
but a common convention dictates that the header be
no more than a quarter of the total page length and
spans width of the page. A header can contain site
title information and navigational elements.
41
Parts of a webpage
3. Footer. Mirroring the header is the footer. It spans the
bottom part of the page and again can be used for
informational or navigational elements.
4. Body. The body is the main part of the web page. The
majority of the content goes in the body of the
website. There are no real standards for the body of
a web page, but keep in mind that the content should
be visually easy to read.
5. Side Bars. Along the sides of the body content area,
sidebars can be added. These are columns of a website
42 content that have more height than width.
Parts of a website
Parts of a website

Webpage can be found in the website and like the webpage,

a website has also its parts,
◇ Home Page. This is the most important part of the

website. The home page is the page that first loads

when the website URL is entered in the browser. The
home page is the first impression to the visitors, so make
sure to put your best foot forward.

44
Parts of a website
Content Pages. Website contains its own unique pages like
◇ About Me Page. This page covers the person/group

who created the website.

◇ Frequently Asked Questions. This is a list of questions

that included the answers about the product or services

or anything else the visitors will ask on a frequent basis.
◇ Contact Information. Adding the contact information of

website allows people to inquire, comment, and

questions about the website. This may include the name,
address, phone number, and email address
45
Parts of a website
Web Advertising
◇ One way to subsidize the website is by selling

advertising space on the website. Make the website the

best it can be to attract advertisers, so spend the time
and energy in building it.
The Use of Existing Online Platform
◇ A WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)

platform is a type of creation tool just for a group of

people and this tool is commonly called web page
services.
46
Parts of a website
Google Sites
◇ Google Sites uses an existing Google account or allows

you to create a new one. If you already have a

Google Account (for Gmail, Google Reader or Google
Groups), all you need to do is use the same email and
password for Google Sites. If you have a Google
account, skip this section and move on to “Creating a
Google Site”.
◇ To sign up for a new Google account, you can start at

the Google Sites home page.

CLOUD COMPUTING
CLOUD COMPUTING
◇ Cloud computing, often referred to as simply “the
cloud”. Is the delivery of on-demand computing
resources – everything from applications to data
centers – over the internet.
◇ In simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and
accessing data and programs over the Internet instead
of your computer’s hard drive. The cloud is just a
metaphor for the Internet.
◇ Cloud computing is a type of Internet based computing
that provides shared computer processing resources
51 and data to computers and other devices on demand.
CLOUD COMPUTING
◇ It is a model for enabling on-demand access to a
shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g,
computer networks, servers, storage, application and
services), which can be rapidly provisioned and
released with minimal management effort.

52
CLOUD COMPUTING
SERVICES
CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICES
INFRASTRUCTURE AS A SERVICE (IaaS)
◇ Cloud computing gives business to access the vital web
architecture, such as storage space, servers and connections
without the business need of purchasing and managing their
Internet Infrastructure.
◇ Because the economies of scale and specialization involved,
this can be to the beneficial of both the business providing
the infrastructure and the one using it. In particular, it allows
an Internet business way to develop and grow on demand.
Amazon, Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and
Rackspace Cloud are some of the organization that provides
54 this services
CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICES
PLATFORM AS A SERVICE (PaaS)
◇ Infrastructure of clouds renders the scalability and

deployment of any application to help make

expenses scalable and predictable. Some
examples of a platform system include Mosso,
Google App Engine, and Force.com. The chief
benefit of a service like this is that, for as little as
no money can initiate the application without any
stress more than basic development and maybe a
little porting in dealing with the existing app.
55
CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICES
SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE (SaaS)
◇ Cloud applications allow the cloud to be leveraged

for software architecture, reducing the burdens of

maintenance, support, and operations by having
the application run on computers belonging to the
vendor.
◇ Gmail and Salesforce are among examples of

software run as clouds, but not all software has to

be based in cloud computing.
