wonder
and
doubt
Are we qualified to become a
philosopher?
Philosophize
• We all have the potential to philosophize
since we have the tendency to wonder and
doubt,
• We have the capacity to reflect on our
experiences; and
• We have a never-ending need to learn and
discover.
Plato
• Traced man’s need to philosophize to his
sense of wonder (curious).
• Whenever we are confronted with an
experience, we always wonder how it came
about.
• Man’s curiosity drives him to ask questions,
some of which have no definite answer.
• Where did we come from? Why do we exist?
For what purpose where we created?
• This perspective drives the need of a
philosopher to question, examine , and learn
more.
Rene Descartes
• Traced the need to philosophize to doubt.
• His method of examining ideas and
perspectives became the basis of critical
thinking and analysis in the sciences.
• For example, a scientific hypothesis must
first be tested and verified before it is
accepted as truth.
• In life, we will be faced with several ideas
an arguments which presents themselves
as “truths”.
• A critical and questioning perspective is
necessary to determine if indeed these
ideas or views are correct and true.
Karl Jaspers
• We need to philosophize because
of experience
• He believed that we are
confronted with experience which
challenge our ideas and
framework
• For Jaspers, philosophy provides
us a means to understand
adverse or challenging conditions,
and to rise above them and gain
new knowledge and perspective
Socrates
• The need to philosophize is
driven by the love of
wisdom.
• To love wisdom is to have an
insatiable desire for truth.
• The who engage in
philosophy is not satisfied
with figuring out the answer to
a question, He seeks to
continue to question, to probe
and to discuss in order to get
to the bottom things.
How do we characterize the study of
philosophy?

something. It’s a set of ideas and facts that
provide support for something.
• A framework is defined as a way of thinking about
the world and is composed of the views and
beliefs of a person.
• Whenever a person encounters a problem or
questions in life, he or she goes back to his/her
own framework to make sense of the problem.
Analysis of Framework
• Internal Questions – questions dealing
with our own correctness and values.
Which can be addressed with our own
personal frameworks
• External Questions – seek to question
the very frameworks upon which people
base their own belief and views.
Examination of Knowledge
• The central principle of philosophy is
examination and questioning, this is
often applied in the analysis of the
frameworks of the other areas or
sciences.
Examination of Knowledge
• Philosophy goes hand in hand with other disciplines
in examining their fundamental purposes and
evaluating the changes they experience.
• There is a philosophy of science, which seeks to
understand the fundamental principles that guide
scientific thought.
• There is also a philosophy of religion, which
examines the basic tenets of any faith.
• There is philosophy of education, political philosophy,
philosophy of history – every aspect of knowledge
can benefit from inquiring nature of philosophy.
As a Discipline
• Philosophy itself is a distinct area of
knowledge with its own goals, concerns,
and ways of doing things.
• It is divided into several branches each
of which deals with a particular aspect
of life.
Branches of Philosophy
• Political Philosophy – studies government and
deals with questions of justice, power and rights
and obligations of citizens.
• Philosophy of the Human Person – is an area in
philosophy that understands the human person
from a philosophical perspective.

A method of mental exercise on any type of
experience
Group Activity
• Students will be grouped into 4 groups.
Each group will think of a scenario that
shows holistic perspective and partial
perspective. Each group will present
their ideas in front through drama.
Question:
• What is the relevance of learning
philosophy in your day to-day
existence amidst various
challenges that you face?
Question:
•Why do we philosophize
things?
Question:
• Why is it important to have a
holistic perspective? Does it
helped you? In what way?
Key Point
Philosophy, meaning "love of wisdom," is a science
where reason and logic are used to understand reality and
answer questions of knowledge, morality, and human
nature. Learning philosophy requires learning to look into
all available perspectives and work on their relationship to
come up with sound, logical, and valid conclusions. In the
process, doing philosophy helps one to develop the skill of
broadly looking at the situation first before concluding
anything.
