What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words which give a

complete meaning in sense.

Examples:

• Am an engineer I. INCORRECT
• I am an engineer. CORRECT
Patternis an example for
others to follow.
The concept of pattern is one of the
essential principles of modern methods of
language teaching.

English has basic patterns and grammatical

structures which students would do well to
master in order to understand, speak, and
write English well.
1. SUBJECT-INTRANSITIVE VERB (S-IV)
2. SUBJECT-TRANSITIVE VERB-DIRECT OBJECT (S-TV-DO)
3. SUBJECT-TRANSITIVE VERB-INDIRECT OBJECT-DIRECT
OBJECT (S-TV-IO-DO)
4. SUBJECT-TRANSITIVE VERB-DIRECT OBJECT-OBJECT
COMPLEMENT (S-TV-DO-OC)
5. SUBJECT-LINKING VERB-PREDICATE NOUN/NOMINATIVE (S-
LV-PN)
6. SUBJECT-LINKING VERB-PREDICATE ADJECTIVE (S-LV-PA)
What is a subject?
- It is the doer of the action/topic of the sentence.
- It answers the questions:
What?
Who?

Examples:
 Cassie won the match. (Who won the match?)
 A cat is killed by the rat. (What is killed by the rat?)
Verbs in this pattern are called
intransitive.

Intransitiveverb does not need an

object to complete its meaning.
ex.: bloom
yawn
cry
The dog barks.

S IV
The ice melts.

S IV
Gabriel and Ava woke and yawned.

S IV
WHAT IS TRANSITIVE VERB?
- Verb that requires an object.
EXAMPLE:

o I WANT
o PLANTS PRODUCE

*NOT A COMPLETE
SENTENCE
THE DIRECT OBJECT IS THE RECEIVER OF
THE ACTION IN THE SENTENCE. IT IS A WORD
THAT ANSWERS THE QUESTION “WHAT OR
WHOM” AFTER THE VERB.
Ex:
o I want candy. o (What do you want?)

o I love you. o (Whom do you love?)

EXAMPLE:
Plants produce seeds.

S TV DO
EXAMPLE:
