COMMUNICATING TO THE
MASSES: COMMUNICATION
What is Communication?
• Communication comes from the Latin word
“communicare” meaning “to share.”
2. To persuade
Trying to convince someone; you may affect the
audience to do a certain act providing that is
desirable.
3. To entertain
This includes watching television, listening to
music and literature that will arouse your interest.
This is for enjoyment or pleasure that teaches you
to appreciate things
4. To Inspire
Inspiring to encourage the audience that they can
succeed to whatever the path the go through.
• Effective communication has something to do with
understanding and knowing the influence of
communication.
2. Principle of Attention
Effective communication requires an attentive
reciever. The receiver’s attention should be drawn
towards message.
3. Principle of Consistency
Communication should be consistent with the
plan, objectives, policies and programs. Inconsistent
message create chaos and confusion.
4. Principle of Adequacy
Information should be sufficient and complete.
Lack of Adequacy may cause misinterpretations that
leads to confusion.
5. Principle of Integration
“Communication is means to an end, not an end
itself.” This aims to incorporate the idea of
commonness and cooperation to both sender and
reciever of the message.
6. Principle of Timeliness
Importance of the value of time as it affects
relevance and effectiveness of a message in a given
situation.
7. Principle of Informality
Transmitting message depends to a person we are
talking to and to the location where communication
takes place.
8. Principle of Feedback
There should be a feedback information from the
recipient to know whether he has understood the
message in the same sense in which the sender has
meant it.
9. Principle of Economy
Indicates the importance of meaning than how it
is conveyed. It focuses on main thoughts of the
message rather than the amount of information given
10. Commuication Networks
Refers to the effectiveness of the medium used to
transmit the message.

According to Alberts et al. (2007), there are 6
basic elements of communication: the setting,
participants, message creation, channels, noise
and feedback to explain how communication unfolds.
Channels
• The medium where the message travels. This refers on
how the message is transmitted from a sender to the
reciever.
Noise
The barriers of communication . There are two types of
