Battery-Introduction

Batteries are used to run many applications on a regular basis, varying from electronic items to
telecommunication equipment. There are two major categories of batteries:

•Wet cells
•Dry cells

Wet cells comprise lead acid batteries, which are used for various motive applications such as forklifts,
automotive, railroad signals, communication systems, and others.

Dry cells include two battery types, which are often used by consumer markets. These are:

•Primary batteries (disposable)


•Secondary batteries (rechargeable)

Where are Batteries Used?

End-users use batteries for the following applications:

Defense sector - uses batteries for aircraft ground and onboard starting, torpedo/missile propulsion,
battle tanks and other tactical vehicles, defense communication, generator start, etc.

Telecommunications sector - uses batteries for switching equipment, radio, paging, cellular networks,
PABX equipment, microwave and coaxial repeater stations, satellite communication systems, optical fiber
cables, generator start, etc.

Industrial sector - uses batteries for UPS, process control power supplies, genset starting, power
stations, switch gears, cathodic protection, etc.

Railways - use batteries for railway signaling and telecommunications, railway coach air-conditioning,
electric and diesel locomotives, etc.
