Rabies prevention and
Control program is to help
the citizens of the
Philippines to be careful and
know about rabies, it comes
from infected animals
especially street animals
who are not vaccinated.
• Rabies is 100% fatal and 100% preventable as
DOH stated
• Rabies can be fatal and there has been 200-
300 death of Filipinos.

To declare Philippines Rabies-Free by year 2022

WHAT IS RABIES?
• Causative Agent: Rhabdovirus
• Incubation Period: 20-90 days for humans; 1
week – 7.5 months for dogs
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• First withdrawn • Incubation period


• Prodromal stage – headache,
• Change in mood pain and numbness sensation
at the site of bite, depression,
• Shows penile erection or
spontaneous ejaculation for
nervousness and males
apprehension • Acute neurologic phase
• Unusual salivation • Spastic – anxiety,
confusion, insomnia
• Paralysis starts on • Dementia – intense
hind legs towards excitement, difficulty in
breathing, swallowing,
the whole body drooling hydrophobia
• Paralytic – flaccid
• Death ascending symmetric,
coma, death

INTERVENTIONS/MANAGEMENT FOR INFECTED
HUMAN

• Isolate patient • Observe universal precaution,


which are essential wearing gloves
• Encourage family to provide care
and company • Wash hands frequently
• Darken the room and observe • Remove oral and nasal secretions
silence
• Dispose contaminated materials
• Give food if patient is hungry
• Perform terminal disinfection
• Keep water out of sight

Postexposure treatment for rabies:
For Dog bite:
• Wash wound with soap and water and seek consultation
• Anti-tetanus serum/tetanus anti-toxin suture if sever
wounds
• Observe dog for 10 days, if possible, for signs of rabies
• Recommended vaccines that provide active immunity
that infiltrated in and around the wound for the first
dose of the vaccine
• PVCV (purified vero cell vaccine) = 0.1ml
• PDEV (purified duck embryo vaccine) = 0.2 ml
• Reduce multisite IM (2-1-1) schedule

Prevention of Rabies

1. Pre-exposure prophylactic treatment for high risk individuals


• Treatment: High-Risk every year (lab), 2 x year (vet)
• PDEV = 1.0 ml
• PVCV = 0.5 ml

To reduce risk:
• Vaccinate pets
• Keep pets confined
• Report stray animals to the city vet
• Get vaccinated yourself
