Siemens Automation Program

This document provides an overview of Siemens' automation program at MIET. It discusses the four industrial revolutions from mechanization powered by water and steam to today's cyber-physical systems. It then explains what industrial automation is and how it uses devices like PLCs, SCADA, robots and IT to replace human decision making in production. The rest of the document outlines the modules in the Siemens automation program at MIET, including PLCs, switchgear, drives, HMIs and SCADA. It discusses projects involving hardware implementation and an edible oil neutralization section. The evaluation criteria including problem sets, class tests, attendance and grading are also summarized.

What is Industrial Automation?

 Automation is the second step beyond

mechanization in the scope of
industrialization.

 Mechanizationis the manual operation of a

task using powered machinery that depends
on human decision making.

 Onthe other hand, Industrial automation is

the use of control devices, such as PLC’s,
SCADA, Drives, robots and information
technologies for handling different
processes and machineries in an industry to
replace a human being.

Need of Industrial Automation
 To reduce Periodic or Manual checking

 To increase the Productivity

 Reduce the Production Cost

 To improve Product Quality

 To increase the Flexibility

 Operator Friendly and Improves the Safety

Automation hierarchy
 Automation Equipment's

Sensor/Actuators
 Sensors convert the real time parameters
like temperature, pressure, flow, level, etc
into electrical signals.
 This sensor data further transferred to the
controller so as to monitor and analyze the
real time parameters.
 Ex.Thermocouple, proximity sensors,
RTDs, flow meters, etc.

 Actuators converts the electrical signals

(from the controllers) into mechanical
means to control the processes.
 Ex. Flow control valves, solenoid valves,
pneumatic actuators, relays, DC motors
and servo motors.
Automation Equipment's
PLC
 Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are
most widely used robust industrial controllers
which are capable of delivering automatic control
functions based on input from sensors.

 PLC consists of various modules like CPU, analog

I/O, digital I/O and communication modules.

 It allows the operator to program a control

function or strategy to perform certain automatic
operation on process.
 HMI(Human Machine
Interface)

 HMI’s offers the facilities like,

displaying the information on
computer screens and other displays,
logging the results in the database,
giving alarm signal, etc.

 It uses technologies like SCADA

(Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition) and other visual based
technologies.
