Squiggly Functions

This document provides an introduction to squiggly functions. It explains that a squiggly function represents the number of points where a horizontal line intersects the graph in the xy-plane. An example problem asks the reader to determine the number of x-values where the function g(x) equals 1 by drawing a horizontal line at y=1 and counting the number of intersection points. The document concludes by stating that similar problems may ask about intervals where a function is negative or equal to zero.

When a horizontal line crosses the 𝑥𝑦-coordinate
plane that passes through the 𝑦-axis, then the
number of points at which the horizontal line
intersects represents the squiggly function.
Squiggly Functions
Example:
The graph of 𝑦 = 𝑔(𝑥) is shown in the 𝑥𝑦-coordinate plane
below. If −3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 7 ,for how many values of 𝑥 does g 𝑥 = 1?
𝑥 – value of a point is like the
location or address of the point

𝑔 𝑥 ,𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑦

How many points on the graph

have a y-value of 1?

3 values of 𝑥, where g 𝑥 = 1
Squiggly Functions

A horizontal line can be a very useful tool.

How many values of 𝑥 does

𝑔 𝑥 = 1?
• Draw a horizontal line
across 𝑥y-coordinate plane,
passing through the 𝑦 −
axis at the given value
• Count the no. of points, the
horizontal line intersects the
squiggly function
Squiggly Functions
Sometimes the ACT will ask questions like, over what interval is 𝑓 𝑥 = negative?
or what are the values of 𝑥 for which 𝑓 𝑥 is negative?

−6 ≤ 𝑥 < 3 and 1 < 𝑥 < 5

𝑓 𝑥 =0 , not negative
