NUMBER BASES

Understand and use the concept of


number in base two, eight and five.
• The numbers we use daily are in base ten. The ten
digits used in numbers in based ten are
0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9.
• Numbers in base two are numbers that use two
digits only. The digits are 0 and 1. e.g : 1010112
• Numbers in base eight are numbers that use eight
digits only. (0,1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7) e.g : 6578
• Numbers in base five are umbers that use five digits
only. (0,1,2,3 and 4) e.g : 13425
Understand and use the concept of
number in base two, eight and five.
• The ways to read numbers in various bases.
Examples:
1. 1012 is read as “one zero one base two”
2. 72058 is read as “seven two zero five base eight”
3. 4325 is read as “four three two base five”

• Numbers in base two are also known as binary


numbers.
Place value & Digit value
State the value of the underlined digit in each of the following numbers.

a) 101012

Expanded Notation
Examples of numbers in expanded notation:
a) 101102 = 1×24 + 0×23 + 1×22 +1×21 + 0×20

b) 3258=3×82 + 2×81 + 5×80

c) 30415=3×53 + 0×52 + 4×51 + 1×50


Convert a number in base: two,eight & five to a number
in base ten and vice versa.

1. Perform repeated division to convert a number in base ten to a number in other


bases. For example, convert 71410 to a number in base five:

5 714 Remainder
5 142 …4

5 28 …2

5 5 …3

5 1 …0

0 …1

∴ 71410= 103245
Convert a number in base: two,eight & five to a number
in base ten and vice versa.

2. Convert a number in a certain base to a number in another base using calculator.

• limit for base two, base eight & base ten only.

Examples :

2578 = 101011112 = 17510
