OTN (Optical Transport Network)

OTN is a digital wrapper technology that provides an efficient way to multiplex different services onto optical light paths using a standardized framework. It creates a transparent, hierarchical network designed for both WDM and TDM devices. OTN networks are composed of optical network elements connected by fiber links that provide functions like transport, multiplexing, routing, management, supervision and protection of client signals. OTN adds features like performance monitoring, fault detection and communication channels that were missing from early WDM networks.

OTN(Optical Transport

Network)
What is OTN?
 OTN is defined by the ITU Telecommunication Standardization
Sector (ITU-T). It’s a digital wrapper technology which provides an
efficient and globally accepted way to multiplex different services
onto optical light paths. The OTN technology or digital wrapper
technology provides a network-wide framework that adds
SONET/SDH-like features to WDM equipment. It creates a
transparent, hierarchical network designed for use on both WDM
and TDM devices.

 An OTN network is composed of a set of optical NEs connected

by optical fiber links. These NEs are able to provide functions such
as transport, multiplexing, routing, management, supervision and
protection(survivability) of client signals.
Why OTN?
•The benefits that made SONET a robust optical transport technology, including a
standardized mapping of client signals, enhanced performance monitoring at multiple
layers, comprehensive fault detection and isolation, and embedded communications
channels, were all missing from early WDM networks.

•Each vendor implemented their own proprietary methods of mapping client traffic, of
detecting/isolating alarm faults, and of providing optical performance monitoring. For
single-carrier networks using only one vendor’s equipment, this lack of standardization
wasn’t a serious problem. However, as optical networks grew and became inter-
connected across network boundaries, the lack of OAM standardization for WDM
became a huge liability.
Features of OTN
 Compared with SDH and SONET networks, an OTN network
has the following features:
◦ Ultra capacity with high accuracy,T-bit/second per fiber over
DWDM lines
◦ Service transparency for client signals
◦ Asynchronous mapping , powerful FEC function, simplified
network design, and reduced costs
Compared with traditional WDM networks, an OTN network has
the following features:
◦ Enhanced OAM and networking capabilities for all services.
◦ Dynamic electrical/optical-layer gromming
Benefits of OTN
 The Optical Transport Network (OTN) standards, defined by the
ITU-T G.709 standards committee, were developed to add SONET-
like performance monitoring, fault detection, communication
channels, and multiplexing hierarchy to WDM wavelengths.
 The primary benefits of OTN include:
• Enhanced OAM for wavelengths
• Universal container supporting any service type
• Standard multiplexing hierarchy
• End-to-end optical transport transparency of customer
traffic
• Multi-level path OAM
