This document discusses three types of efficiency used to relate actual and ideal work for compressors:
1. Stage efficiency (ηst) is the ratio of ideal to adiabatic work for a single stage.
2. Adiabatic efficiency (ηc) is the ratio of ideal to adiabatic work for the whole compressor. It may differ from stage efficiency.
3. Polytropic efficiency (ηpc) is defined as the ratio of ideal to adiabatic work for an infinitesimal step in compression. Equations are provided relating these different efficiencies.

COMPRESSOR EFFICIENCY
Three kinds of efficiency are used in relating actual
and ideal adiabatic work for compressors 1. The stage efficiency ηst is the ratio of ideal to adiabatic work for a single stage. 2. The adiabatic efficiency of Compressor ηc is the ratio of ideal to adiabatic work for the whole compressor. It may differ significantly from stage efficiency. 3. The polytropic compressor efficiency ηpc is defined as the ratio of ideal to adiabatic work for an infinitesimal step in the compression process. COMPRESSOR EFFICIENCY The figure opposite define the polytropic efficiency as ηpc =dT0s/ dT0 (1) For the isentropic process, dT0s=T0{(p0+dp0/p0)γ-1/γ - 1} Using the binomial expansion for dp0/p0 <<1 results in (1+ dp0/p0 )γ-1/γ= 1+ γ-1/γ dp0/p0 Thus equ(1) can be written as ηpcdT0 /T0= (γ-1/γ )dp0/p0 (2) COMPRESSOR EFFICIENCY For a compressor process between any pair of stagnation states 01 and 02 (and if ηpc and γ are constant, equation (2) can be integrated as T02/ T01= (p02/p01 )(γ-1/γηpc (3) For constant specific heats the adiabatic compressor efficiency is given by ηc = h02s-h01/ h02-h01 COMPRESSOR EFFICIENCY which is as ηc= h02s-h01/ h02-h01=[ (T02s/ T01 )-1/(T02/ T01 )-1] = [(p02/p01 )(γ-1/γ – 1]/ (T02/ T01 )-1 (4) Combination of 3 and 4 shows the relation between ηc and ηpc as: ηc={(p02/p01)(γ-1/γ-1}/{(p02/p01)(γ-1/γηpc- 1 } In multistage compressor polytropic efficiency and stage efficiency are almost equal. Figure opposite shows compressor overall efficiency versus pressure ratio at various values of stage efficiency. COMPRESSOR EFFICIENCY Stage Efficiency : Since stage consists of rotor and stator the T-s diagram for the same is shown in the opposite figure. HYDRAULIC EFFICIENCIES OF PUMP AND TURBINE The hydraulic efficiency of a pump is defined as ηp= g(H2- H1)/∆Wp Similarly The hydraulic efficiency of turbine is defined as ηh = ∆Wx/g(H1- H2 )
