Types of Software
• System Software:
– Software that directly operates the computer hardware, to
provide basic functionality needed by users and other
software, and to provide a platform for running application
software
• Application Software:
– An application program (app or application for short) is a
computer program designed to perform a group of
coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of
the user.
• Malicious Software:
– Malware, is software that is developed to harm and
disrupt computers.
System Software
• Operating System:
– The operating system allows the parts of a computer to
work together by performing tasks like transferring data
between memory and disks or rendering output onto a
display device. It provides a platform to run high-level
system software and application software.
• Device Drivers:
– Operate or control a particular type of device that is
attached to a computer.
• Utilities:
– Computer programs designed to assist users in the
maintenance and care of their computers.
Technical Terms
Data Center (DC):
• The place where the central server / servers are housed.
Disaster Recovery Site (DRS)
• An alternate data center which will act as a backup resource and ensure
business continuity in case of DC failure
Data Mirroring:
• Storage devices attached to servers located in DC and DRS are updated on a
real time basis to ensure data integrity and availability. In case of hardware
failure.
Backup:
• A backup, or the process of backing up, refers to the copying and archiving
of computer data so it may be used to restore the original after a data loss
event.
Data Loss:
• Data loss is an error condition in information systems in which information
is destroyed by failures or neglect in storage, transmission, or processing.
