TWO-WHEELER
TECHNOLOGIES
PREPARED BY : Mr. P. P. KEVADIYA
LECTURER IN AUTOMOBILE DEPARTMENT
DTS-I
 Digital Twin Spark Ignition used for faster and better
combustion.
 Currently one spark plug at one end of the combustion
chamber is the conventional practice.
 The flame front created by the spark takes some time to
reach the farthest portion of the combustion chamber.
 This leads to slower burning of the air-fuel mixture and
creates limitations in optimizing the combustion chamber
characteristics.
 Two spark plugs at either ends of the combustion
chamber help in faster and better combustion.
 This combustion process of twin spark plugs is being
patented by Bajaj Auto Ltd.
 At present platina, xcd125, 135, discover150, pulsar135,
150, 180, 200, 220 etc. are using the DTS-i technology.
DTS-SI
 Digital Twin Spark Swirl Induction
 The inlet & outlet ports in the DTS-Si engine are
placed at an offset position as compared to DTS-i
engine.
 This offset positioning generates a higher swirl
(hence the name “Swirl Induction”) and turbulence
in the air-fuel mixture inside the engine which
enhances combustion efficiency further.
 In addition to this, like the mother DTS-i engine, the
DTS-Si engine also has an intelligent digital
microprocessor and twin spark plugs.
 All of these result in the 125CC engine delivering a
mileage of 109 kmpl* which is the best among all
motorcycles in India.
I3S
 Idle Stop-Start System first introduced in Hero Splendor
iSmart 110 in March-2014 & then in New Passion Pro,
New Splendor+, HF Deluxe and Achiever 150.
 The Idle Stop-Start System is a low cost method for
increasing fuel economy and decreasing emissions.
 The system turns off the internal combustion engine when
the vehicle stops at a stop light or during stop and go
traffic where the vehicle would normally idle for a
minimum of three to five seconds.
 The engine is then automatically restarted when the
driver is ready to proceed.
 An electronic control unit determines an appropriate time
to turn off the engine based on data from various sensors.
APDV IN SPLENDOR PRO, PASSION PRO AND
THE SPLENDOR NXG

 Hero MotoCorp has developed the Advanced

Pro-Series Digital Variable Ignition technology.
 This system uses digitally (electronically)
controlled variable ignition.
 Passion XPro implements this technology which
controls (varies) the ignition timing digitally.
 Furthermore, it helps to improve burning of the
fuel which results in better pick-up
& mileage as claimed by Hero Motocorp.
ATFT IN CBZ XTREME, HUNK & ACHIEVER
 ATFT stands for Advanced Tumble Flow
Induction Technology.
 It is basically a design optimization in the
engine, which induces a swirling motion in the
air-fuel mixture as it enters the combustion
chamber.
 The swirling motion aids in better mixing of the
fuel particles with air.
 The advantage of this technology is a more
efficient combustion of fuel, resulting in better
fuel economy and cleaner emissions.
ASFS IN SUPER SPLENDOR AND THE
GLAMOUR

 ASFS stands for "Advanced Swirl Flow

Induction System".

 So the objective here should be to provide a

better "air-fuel" mixture by Swirling the charge
into the combustion chamber in the engine,
which helps in better burning of fuel resulting in
lesser pollution and better fuel economy.
CVT
 CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION
 Unlike a conventional automatic transmission
system, the CVT does not make use of gears.
 Instead, it has two pulleys, whose diameters are
variable and are connected by a belt or a chain.
 One end is connected to the engine and the other
one is linked to the wheels, where the power is
delivered.
 The pulleys are movable and as they come closer
to each other, the belt or the chain rides higher
making the diameters of the pulleys larger and
vice-versa.
FTIS
 “FullyTransistorised Ignition System” is
implemented by Hero MotoCorp in its Hero
Glamour and Karizma ZMR bike.

 The 'Transistorised Ignition' system uses a

transistor to switch off and switch on the
charging current to the ignition coil at an
appropriate time.
AMI
 Advanced Microprocessor Ignition System
technology is deployed by Hero MotoCorp for its
bike Hero Xtreme, Achiever 150 and Super
Splendor.
 In this design, the sensors linked to the
throttle control the spark advancement
electronically rather than controlled
mechanically in conventional design.
 This system helps in delivering better pickup,
power along with better fuel efficiency as
claimed by Hero MotoCorp.
HET
 Honda Eco Technology for Improved combustion,
enhances power & fuel efficiency in Honda
Activa, Aviator, Dream Yuga, Dream Neo.
 This is achieved by:
•Reducing friction by using an offset crank
• Significantly reducing weight of reciprocating
parts
• Using low tension piston-ring and improved
bearing oil seal
• Improving combustion by using highly
ignitable nickel spark plug and optimized inlet
port

 The Combi Brake System in Honda two-wheelers
enables you to use both brakes with just a lever.
 It reduces the braking distance and improves stability
while braking.
 Honda Combi Brake with Equaliser, ensures distribution
of Force between the Front and Rear Wheel at the same
time, giving perfect balance to the rider.
 Equalizer

 Equalizer is the brain of the system. Pressing the left

lever activates the Equalizer, which distributes the
braking force between the front and rear wheels
simultaneously so that you can ride with the confidence
of efficient braking in your hands.
AIS
 The Air Induction System (A.I.S.) burns
unburned exhaust gases by injecting fresh
air into the exhaust port.

 Thisinjection of fresh air into the exhaust

port reduces hydrocarbon emissions.

 Used in Yamaha XVS650 Classic.

MCI-5
 Micro Chip ignited-5 Curve Engine
 MCi-5 Engine has featured in Mahindra Centuro &
Pantero bikes.
 This engine technology, which is developed by Mahindra
in-house; smartly balance the engine power and fuel
economy.
 This is basically an ECU (Electronic Control Unit)
controlled engine; which is supported by the sensors.
 The ECU provides 5 different ignition timing angle
(timing advance options) for the engine.
 According to Mahindra, the MCi5 engine adjusts itself to
give great pick-up on slopes or mileage on flat roads;
resulting in fewer gear-shifts while riding.
 MCi5 also adjusts the engine performance according to
road conditions resulting in better power delivery and
fuel efficiency as claimed by Mahindra.
