Defining Social Relationship
• Social Relationship has to do with the relationship between two or
more people in different social spaces notably:
• Home
• Office
• Sport complex
• Hospital
• School etc
*** Anywhere human beings are found, social relationship can exist…
Defining Social Relationship…
According to Sociologists, Peter Berger and Thomas
Luckmann (1966), ‘Society is created by Humans and
human interaction’
Humans are social in nature and engage in a dyadic
social relationship
The type of social relationship engaged depends on
prevailing circumstances and social situation.
Goals of Social Relationship…
Mutual Support and Reciprocity
Source of emotional anchor- for the sick or heart
broken
Financial support
Social security system – eg. Old age
Stability and social order
Types of Social Relationship
Marriage relationship- husband, wife & inlaws
Family Relationship – Nuclear & Extended
Friends and Associates
Professional Colleagues – Managers & Supervisors
Club, Association and Groups- Secular or Spiritual
Church members – service groups/units, officials or members,
Business partners, customers
Neighbours in ceremonies- Birthdays, Naming, House warming
Classification of Social Relationship
• Erving Goffman – a Sociologist classified social
interaction/relationship into 5 Categories namely:
Exchange
Competition
Cooperation
Conflict
Coercion
Exchange
Erving Goffman described exchange as a social process where social
behavior is exchanged for some type reward of equal or greater value
Rewards can be Material or Non-materia
Competition
According to Goffman,
Competition is a process where two or more persons attempt to
achieve a common goal.
Example : Win a prize, Award and Recognition
Life is about Competition. As we compete, we engage is social
interaction. Ensure that your engage in healthy competitions
Cooperation
Goffman describe cooperation as a process of working together to
achieve a common goal.

Conflict
Conflict is described as an integral part of any social process or human
interaction
Coercion
Influencers of Social Relationship
• Love
• Mutual respect and reciprocity
• Patience
• Understanding
• Tolerance
• Cooperation &Unity

Enemies of Positive Social Relationship
• Pride & Arrogance
• Envy and Jealousy
• Unequal commitment
• In sincererity/Lack of Integrity
• Influence of detractors
• Poor communication
• Ingratitude
Concluding Remarks
• All people are not the same
• Humans beings have different social experiences and Upbringing
• People have different psychological make up and emotional
dispositions
• We must not expect that everyone will behave or think like us else we
cannot be good team players.
• Sometimes it may be necessary to deliberately let go hence the need
for tolerance

• There is no perfect relationship
• People will disappointment you
• Offences will surely come but learn to forgive Matt 5:24
• Always leave room for IMPROVEMENT
• Be the Change you want to see in that relationship
