— Education and infrastructure
development programs will be the priorities
under the proposed national budget for
2018, the Department of Budget and
Management (DBM) said on Friday.

DBM Secretary Benjamin Diokno said the
P3.767-trillion (US$75 billion) 2018 budget,
which is an increase of over 12 percent
from the 2017 budget, will continue to
support the plans of the Duterte
administration.

According to Chief Engineer Oliver Hernandez of
the Department of Education (DepEd)- Physical
Facilities and School’s Engineering Division
(PFSED), the government focuses more on building
infrastructure and classrooms for academic
purposes, which he said are not even adequate in
some parts of the country.

“There’s not enough budget. Pag enough na sa
education, wala na para sa sports. The budget
is solely for classroom education, nothing for
sports development. Even if there’s an urge to
make sports facilities a priority, if we lack
budget, it is useless,” Hernandez said.
