Frank Loesser
•Frank ( Francis Henry ) Loesser was born in New York on the 29th of June, 1910.
•Both his father and brother were classical pianists, and by the time he was 4, Loesser could
figure out and play songs on the piano.
•After his father’s death in 1925, Loesser went through many jobs in order to support his family,
working as a restaurant reviewer, process server, drawing political cartoons for the Tuckahoe
Record, a press representative for a small movie company, and an editor for a few different
newspapers.
•In the 30s, Loesser found success in Tin Pan Alley, leading to him signing a Hollywood deal with
Universal in 1936, and moving to Hollywood with his wife, Lynn. He worked as a lyricist with
composers such as Burton Lane and Arthur Schwartz.
•His first project as both composer and lyricist came with ‘ Where’s Charley?’ in 1948, the success
of which was followed on Broadway with Guys and dolls, The Most Happy Fella, and How to
succeed in Business without really trying, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama.
•Loesser also won an academy award for ‘Baby it’s cold outside’
Where’s Charley
Where’s Charley was Loessers first Broadway project. Originally, the score was to be written by
Harold Arlen, but he was forced to abandon it when his house burned down. The hit song from the
show was ‘One in love with Amy’ which became synonymous with the show’s star, Ray Bolger.

Guys and Dolls
•This was Loesser’s biggest hit, and was written in 1950, running for 1200 performances, and
winning a Tony for best musical.
•The original production starred Vivian Blaine, Robert Alda and Isabel Bigley
•There was a revival in 1992 starring Nathan Lane, Peter Gallagher and Faith Prince that ran for
almost the same amount of time as the original.
•A film version starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine had the highest box office
gross in 1955.

The Most Happy Fella
•3 act musical, featuring almost 3 hours of continuous music – 30 songs of varying styles.
•Loesser’s own brother critiqued the show heavily, claiming that ‘5 or 6 of the bars of the score
were actually quite commendable’

Director, Conductor, Actor, and Supporting actor, and the Pulitzer prize for Best Drama.

•The song ‘Heart of gold’ was written specifically for Rudy Vallee.
