Introduction
• Bio-Mechanics is the study of mechanics of a human body.( Forces exerted
by muscles and gravity on skeletal structure.
• It is the science concerned with internal and external forces acting on the
human body.
• Bio-Mechanics divided into two branches –
A) Kinetics
B) Kinematics
• Kinematics is the study of motion from a geometrical point of view without
considering forces and torques acting on it while Kinetics is the study of
motion considering the acting forces and torques.
• Subfields of Bio-Mechanics – Kinesiology (Kinetics and physiology),gait
analysis, musculo skeleton biomechanics & Sports Bio-mechanics.
Bio – Mechanics in operational setup
• Bio-Mechanics is the study of physical interactions of workers with
their tools, machines and materials to improve the working condition
,enhance worker performance while minimizing risk of
musculoskeletal injury (MSDs).
• Occupational Bio-Mechanics considers human factors,
anthropometry, individual risk factors ( age, gender, inherited generic
characteristic), workplace risk factors(methods, materials, machines,
environment, and physical stressors), Psychological factors, economic
concerns, and return to work issues.
Important guidelines for development of
ergonomics in workplace
• Reducing the number and severity of work related injury
• Reducing employee turnover
• Increasing productivity
• Enhancing product quality
• Escalating employee morale
Instrumentation techniques in bio-mechanics
research
• Electromyography (EMG) is an electro diagnostic medicine technique
for evaluating and recording the electrical activity produced by
skeletal muscles. EMG is performed using an instrument called an
electromyography, to produce a record called electromyogram.
Pattern of electromyography activity
3-D Motion Analysis
• This technique asses body motion dysfunctions and to enstablish
therapies , sports professionals to enhance athletics’ performance at
any level.
• Reflective markers are placed on the body at appropriate location for
which the angles are determine.
• A 3D motion analysis system comprising of 6 infra red camera system
records movements of the reflected markers (aluminum die cast silver
coating marker).
• This analysis are software based and dependent on the protocol fixed.
Bio Mechanics Workload Assessment
• Manual material handling (MMH) task includes the lifting , lowering,
pushing, pulling, carrying, twisting & turning of materials.
• Postural control requires the ability for balancing the body in space
through the visual vestibular, and somatosensory systems and makes
an appropriate musculoskeletal response to perturbations
• Some work involves movements with lifted arms and is mainly static
work that is carried out while standing ,which lead to pain in neck ,
shoulder and wrist/hand. This pain has been co-related with
repetitive movements associated with their work.
