resources, and the opportunity to engage in specialized

The Ten Principles
 The UN Global Compact's ten principles in the areas of
human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption
enjoy universal consensus and are derived from:
 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
 The International Labour Organization's Declaration on Fundamental
Principles and Rights at Work
 The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development
 The United Nations Convention Against Corruption

 The UN Global Compact asks companies to embrace,

support and enact, within their sphere of influence, a set of
core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards,
the environment and anti-corruption
 Human Rights
 Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of
internationally proclaimed human rights; and
 Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights
abuses.

 Labour
 Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and
the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
 Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory
labour;
 Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
 Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of
employment and occupation.
 Environment
 Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary
approach to environmental challenges;
 Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater
environmental responsibility; and
 Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of
environmentally friendly technologies.

 Anti-Corruption
 Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all
its forms, including extortion and bribery.
The Global Compact and the UNDP

 The Global Compact also encourages businesses to engage

with the United Nations and other organizations concerned
with peace and development in concrete projects to promote
the principles and broader societal challenges.

 The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is one

of four UN agencies supporting the implementation of the
Global Compact.

 UNDP holds the primary responsibility for introducing and

operationalizing the Global Compact at the field level in
developing countries and countries with emerging economies.
 The Global Compact helps in initiating and building
action-oriented relationships between business and other
sectors.

 To introduce the Global Compact at a local and practical

level, UNDP together with the other UN agencies (ILO,
OHCHR, UNEP) have prepared a basic conceptual
framework.

 The four main components of this framework are:

 outreach and advocacy;
 policy dialogue;
 partnership projects and
 initiatives.
Global Compact in India
 The Global Compact Network, India was formed by the
UNGC participant companies and other organizations and

Global Compact Programme.

companies- large & SME, academic institutions and civil
society organizations to join hands towards strengthening
Responsible Business initiatives in India &

Need for Global Compact Network, India:
Today when most progressive companies are
focusing on CSR, Global Compact is the right platform to
demonstrate nationally and internationally the
commitment to CSR and ethical working of the
companies. Recently issued Voluntary guidelines on CSR
by Ministry of Corporate Affairs lay emphasis on almost
the same core issues as advocated by UNGC. Department
of Public Enterprises has also issued guidelines on CSR
for CPSEs which makes a reference to UNGC.
