COMMUNICATION

• Communication as a human
activity always serves a function.
• Functions of communication
refer to how humans use
language for different purposes.
FUNCTION OF
COMMUNICATION

• Theoretician such as Roman Jakobson,


Michael Halliday, and Bronislaw
Malinowsi have categorized the
different uses or functions of
communication.
REGULATION/CONTROL

• Occurs when an individual


is quite uncertain towards
another’s expected
behavior that may be
unusual from the usual
friendly, initial encounters.

• The regulatory function comprises
three developmental stage:
1. The regulation of self by others (a
person is being controlled by
others)

2. The regulation of self by self (a


person is controlling himself/herself)

3. The regulation of others by self (a


person is controlling others)
SOCIAL INTERACTION/EMOTIONAL
EXPRESSION
• Emotions coordinate social
interaction.
• A person’s emotional expression
serves as a social expression which
suggests prepared responses in
others.
FOR EXAMPLE:
- Anger elicits fear-related responses
SOCIAL INTERACTION/EMOTIONAL
EXPRESSION
Individuals who lack perception or
generation of emotional messages
may experience difficulty in social
relationships.
• Lack of emotional expression provides
others with less information on their
mental state and receives less social
interaction.
• Lack of perception of emotion can
be a problem to social interaction
MOTIVATION
• Every communication starts with a
motivation.
• The key to communicative competence
of a person is finding motivation to
communicate better that he/she
currently does.
• People are motivated to communicate
in two ways – by approach or by
avoidance – which shows the positive
and negative sides of communication.

POSITIVE MOTIVATION
• Communication goals – are the
speaker’s objectives or purposes in
communication.

TYPES OF NEGATIVE MOTIVATION
A. Communication apprehension –
is the fear or anxiety that a person
experiences as a result of either
real or anticipated communication
with a person or group of people.

B. Context apprehension – is the fear
or anxiety in a particular context such
as interpersonal, small group or public
speaking.
• Social anxiety – anxiety present in
interpersonal communication
• Shyness – in small group
communication is a social anxiety at
an extended period.
• Public speaking anxiety – stage fright
INFORMATION
• Communication can be
used for giving and getting
information. Giving
information usually comes in
the form of statements of
facts (grammatically known
as declaratives)
EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION
• Human always need to express their
emotions verbally and nonverbally.
Emotions are a central part of who
we are. Beyond thinking about the
things and people in our world, we
feel about them and about
ourselves.
