Automatic fault detection system using PLC
In India we do not have a system in hand when a fault occurs
in transmission line.
Matter of concern is that since we do not have an authentic
time system, this leads to the damage of the equipments
connected.
And it will also turns out to be a threat to the human around .
We can overcome this problem by using power line
communication.
Power line communication is a communication technology
that enables sending data over existing cables using IOT.

Automatic fault detection system using PLC
The main objective of our project is to detect the real time
fault occurred in transmission line.
For the detection and location of faults on the present
extra high voltage transmission lines.
For the maintenance and checking of the transmission
lines is to be carried out in constant time intervals.

Automatic fault detection system using PLC
Techniques for the detection and location of faults have
been intensively studied and applied over years.
Wireless technology is being widely used since last few
years in automation and it has also become a part of our
lives.
Zigbee, GSM are some technologies that falls into the
wireless category.
Zigbee disadvantages over PLC are :
8
Automatic fault detection system using PLC
•Low transmission
•Replacement with Zigbee compliant appliances can be costly
The disadvantages of GSM over PLC :
•It has less efficiency
•Security issues
•Short range communication
Now a days, a Power Line Communication is being
widely utilized in home automation, home security etc.

Presently KSEB is detecting the faults manually.
The system we are going to implement will help us to
detect the transmission line faults automatically.
The technology used here is much efficient when
compared to the other technologies like GSM and Zigbee.
Fault can be detected at the earliest by eradicating the
need of man power

Automatic fault detection system using PLC
This system can detect the open circuit fault and short
circuit.
Whenever the line is disconnected ,master near to
transformer stops receiving the signals from the slave unit
which is mounted on the pole.
As soon as the master receives no signal response from
slave, it immediately turns off the relay of that respective
phase with remaining phases in ON condition.
After the detection of faulty phase the IOT module
initiate the message to the area lineman and main office
stating the exact pole location of line failure with faulty
phase.

Automatic fault detection system using PLC
After clearing the fault ,to initiate power supply again,
lineman or main office need to send message to master unit.
This system consist of master unit and slave unit.
A signal is sent over the power line to every slave unit whose
response indicates that the distribution line is working
properly.
If there is a fault in any phase of distribution line, then slave
unit sends the data related to type of power failure.
After the reception of data the master unit decides that which
relay should be kept in OFF condition.
The flowchart for the system is given below
