You are on page 1/ 15

You use strategies when you write.

One of
which is the use of patterns in developing
your ideas. “Process Analysis˝ a particular
strategy when you show someone how to
change the settings in his twitter account,
when you share how to change his cover or
profile photos or how to save contacts in his
smart phone.
You are using ˝Description˝ when you convincing
a friend to buy also your latest tab, when telling
how your board mate looks like when he gets up
in the morning; and a ˝narration˝
When you tell the story of your first date or how
you made up your mind when choosing a track to
pursue. These, and long with the other patterns or
paragraph development, are not that difficult to
learn. Just be familiar the transitional expression
that signal your reader that a particular is being
used.
Patterns of Development
-This sort of paragraph
requires chronological
ordering. Using transitional
words and phrases that signal
time are highly recommended.
It is like telling a story.
-In this paragraph, you convey
something sounds, smells,
tastes, feels, and/or looks. Using
transitional words and phrases
that indicate location are often
recommended.
SUBJECTIVE
- The writer is describing an
expression of what is observed.
- often used in fiction
OBJECTIVE
- usually employed and reportorial
and scientific writing.
- the goal of the writer is the present
an impartial and actual picture of an
object or scene.
Identifies a term and sets it apart from
all other terms that may be related.
Generally, it begins by citing the
general class to which the term
belongs.
A Definition can be developed in a
number of ways. The method you
choose should be determined by the
term you are defining.
1. CHARACTERISTIC OR
FEATURES. Scientific definition
typically rely on this type of definition.
Physical features as well as behaviors (
as in animal or cell behavior) may be a
part of this type of definitions.
2. FUNCTION.
How something works, or what it does
can be an important part of definition.
3. WHAT IT IS NOT.
Ironically, we can get a pretty good
sense of what something is like, by
learning what it is not, or what it is
lacking.
4. WHAT IT IS SIMILAR TO.
Comparison and analogy help us
understand things that are unfamiliar to
us.
5. EXAMPLE
Giving examples illustrating what the
term means can be highly effective, as
in the above definition of “ idiocy”.
6. ITS ORIGINS.
Providing a history of what a term has
meant can help us understand its current
meaning. For example, the slang term
“wimp” comes from the term “wimple” which
refers to a headscarf women wore in
medieval Europe. Exploring the evolution of
the term could yield interesting insight into
the connotations of the contemporary terms.
7. ITS EFFECT.
Discussing what effects the subject
produces is important with certain subjects or
certain contexts.
In Definition paragraph (or essay),
the writer΄s goal is to help the
reader understand new terms or
concepts, or to come to new
understanding of terms they may
be familiar.
 Indeveloping a paragraph using
exemplification (for illustration), the
writer develops a general statement,
the topic sentence, with one or more
examples. Illustrations though clear
and specific examples help explain
abstract ideas and illuminate or
clarify meaning in texts. Writers use
examples to make a general idea
clear to exemplify an idea.
A paragraph that demonstrates
comparison and/or contrast
examines how given subjects are
either similar or different.
COMPARISON examines how
the subjects are the same.
CONTRAST examines how the
subject are different.
Comparison: Contrast:
●in the same way ●yet
●by the same ●and yet
●nevertheless
token
●nonetheless
●similarly ●after all
●in like manner ●but
●likewise ●however
●in similar fashion ●though
● otherwise
●on the contrary
●in contrast
●notwithstanding
●on the other hand
