CREATIVE
WRITING
TEST I: IDENTIFICATION
• 1. This is a kind of writing that expresses ideas and thoughts in an imaginative
way." It's the "art of making things up" or putting a creative splash on history, as in
creative nonfiction.
• 2. This is a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less
elaborate than a novel.
• 3. This is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a
short story or other literary work.
TEST I: IDENTIFICATION
• 4. This is the time and place in which a story happens. Authors often use
descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons or weather to provide a
strong sense of this.
• 5. This is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict.
• 6. This is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main
character is usually on one side of this element of the story.
• 7. This is the central idea or belief in a short story.

• 8. This element means from whose eyes the story is being told. It tells who is the narrator
of the story.
• 9. This is a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is
nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as
meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure.
• 10. This is a word or phrase that possesses a separate meaning from its literal definition. It
can be a metaphor or simile, designed to make a comparison. It can be the repetition of
alliteration or the exaggeration of hyperbole to provide a dramatic effect.
