Quartiles

1) The document discusses finding quartiles and the median from a set of ungrouped data. Quartiles and the median divide a data distribution into quarters or halves. 2) An example is provided of student quiz scores arranged in order and divided into quartiles based on their position. The median is identified as Q2 and the middle score. 3) Students are asked to find the quartiles and median from other data sets and interpret what they represent.

Nine students will stand in front of

their class mates arrange themselves
according to their height (from
shortest to tallest).
a. Who is in the middle of the
students? How many students are
shorter/taller than her/him?
b. How many percent of the students
are shorter/taller than her/him?
Objectives:

1. Illustrate measure of position

(Quartile) for ungrouped data.
2. Calculate measure of
position such as Q1, Q2, and Q3.
3. Interpret and apply measure
of position in real life situation.
Activity
Following Directions:
A group of students obtained the
following scores in their statistics
quiz:

8, 2, 5, 4, 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9

1. Arrange the score in ascending

order.
2. Mark the score that is in the
middle of the distribution.
3. Mark also the score that is in
the middle of those scores at the
left of the middle score.
4. Do the same with those scores
at the right of the middle score.
5. What do you call those scores
that are marked?
Arrange the score in ascending order:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9

Analysis

•How did you find the activity?

What do you feel while doing the
activity?
•Have you encountered
difficulties in doing the activity?
•What have you and your group
mates done to remedy those
difficulties?
ABSTRACTION
The median divides the
distribution into two equal parts.
It is a point in the distribution
where one-half of the
distribution lies below it or above
it. Hence, if the scores in
previous activity represents a
distribution, one half of it lies
below 5 and one-half lies above
5. (where 5 represents the
median).
Quartiles are points that divide a
distribution into four equal parts

To find the quartile of the given

set of data, arrange the data in
ascending order, then use the
formula to get the position of the
quartiles and lastly, looked at the
data that corresponds to the
position.
Example
The following are the scores of
Gabriel in his 7 quizzes in
Mathematics 10. 87, 88, 89, 87,
95, 86, 94 a. Find Q2. What does
it imply?
First arrange the numbers from
lowest to highest.
