Audio Information and Media

This document discusses audio information and media. It defines audio as sound, especially when recorded, transmitted or reproduced. Audio media uses audio or recordings to deliver information through sounds. Characteristics of good audio include clarity, relevance, appropriate pitch, length, language and unbiased content. Common audio formats are MP3, M4A, WAV, and WMA. Analog audio replicates original sound waves while digital audio converts sounds to digital code. Audio information can be in the form of radio broadcasts, music, sound recordings, sound effects or audio podcasts. Advantages of audio include extending voice and music while limitations include needing extra resources and costs. Strong lesson planning and trained teachers are needed to effectively use audio in education.

MP3 (MPEG-3 Audio layer 3
• a common format for consumer
audio, as well as a standard of
digital audio compression for the
transfer and playback of music on
most digital audio player.
MP4 A/ AAC (MPEG-4 Audio/ Advance
Audio Coding )
• an audio coding standard for
lossy digital audio compression.
Designed to be the succesor of the
format MP3. AAC generally
achieves better sound quality than
MP3 at similar bit rates.
WAV
• is a Microsoft audio file format standard
for storing an audio bit stream on PC’s. It
is used for storing sound in files developed
jointly by Microsoft and IBM. WAV sound
files end with a.wav extensions and can be
played by nearly all windows applications
that support sound. It has become a
standard file format for game sounds,
among others.
WMA (Windows Media Action)

•Is an audio data

compression technology
developed by Microsoft
used with Windows Media
Player. It has abilities for
copy protection.
TYPES OF AUDIO MEDIA
• Analog- refers to audio recorded using methods
that replicate the original sound waves. It is the
oldest type of recording audio. Vinyl records and
cassette tapes are examples of analog mediums.
• Digital- In the computer, audio is processed by
converting analog signal into digital code using
PCM (Phase Change Memory) CD’s and MP3
files are examples of digital medium

• Radio broadcast- live or recorded audio sent
through radio waves to reach a wide audience.
• Music- vocal and/or with instrumental sounds
