Random Variables and Probability Distributions

This document discusses random variables and probability distributions. It begins by defining key terms like random variable, discrete random variable, continuous random variable, sample space, and experiment. Examples of each are provided. The document then discusses how to classify a random variable as discrete or continuous and provides illustrative examples of each. It concludes by noting that discrete random variables result from counting outcomes while continuous random variables result from measuring outcomes.

Probability

It is the chance that something might happen.

EXPERIMENT
Any activity which can be done repeateadly
under similar conditions.
Example:
1. Tossing of Coins
2. Rolling a Die.
3. Drawing a Card.
Sample Space
The set of all
possible outcomes of
an experiment.
ACTIVITY
List the sample space of the
following experiments.
1. Tossing two coins.
2. Rolling a die and tossing a coin
simultaneously.
3. Drawing a spade from a deck of
cards.
Variable
It is an element or date that is liable to
vary or change.
CLUE:
VARY  CHANGES
Random Variable
It is a function that associates a real
number to each element in the sample
space.
 It is a variable whose values are
determined by chance.

Two Types of Random Variable
1. Discrete Random Variable  is a
variable whose value is obtained by
counting.
2. Continuous Random Variable  is a
variable whose value is obtained by
measuring.
Example of Discrete:
◦ number of students present
◦ number of red marbles in a jar
◦ number of heads when flipping
three coins students’ grade level
Example of Continuous:
◦height of students in class
◦ weight of students in class
◦ time it takes to get to school
◦distance traveled between classes
Example of Continuous:
