WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING ?

 Green building is the practice of

creating structures and using processes
that are environmentally responsible and
resource-efficient throughout
a building's life-cycle from siting to
design, construction, operation,
maintenance, renovation and
deconstruction.
Need of Green Buildings
 BUILDINGS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR 40% OF
WORLDWIDE ENERGY FLOW AND MATERIAL
USE,CONVENTIONAL BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN
IDENTIFIED AS THE LARGEST SOURCE OF GREEN-
HOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, EVEN MORE THAN THAT OF
THE TRANSPORT AND INDUSTRY SECTOR.
 THEY AFFECT AIR QUALITY,HEALTH AND CONTRIBUTE
TO CLIMATE CHANGE.DURING THE LIFE
CYCLE,CONVENTIONAL BUILDINGS HARM THE
ENVIRONMENT IN MANY WAYS.
OBJECTIVES OF GREEN
BUILDING
•Green Buildings are designed to reduce the
overall impact on human health and the natural
environment by the following ways:
• Using energy, water and other resources
efficiently.
• By reducing waste, pollution, and
environmental degradation.
It aims to minimize the
enviornmment impact associated
with all life-cycles.
It is the concept of sustainable building
and has largest impact on cost and
performance
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The layout of the construction can
be strategised so that natural light
pours for additional warmth.
Shading the roof with trees offers
an eco-friendly alternative to air
conditioning.
To minimize water consumption
one should aim to use the
water which has been
collected, used, purified and
reused.
Materials should be use that
can be recycled and can
generate surplus amount of
energy.
An example of this are solar
power panels, not only they
provide lightening but they are
also a useful energy source.
INDIAN GREEN BUILDING
COUNCIL
• The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC)
was formed in the year 2001 by Confederation
of Indian Industry (CII).
• The aim of the council is to bring green
building movement in India and facilitate
India to become one of the global leaders in
green buildings by 2015.
IGBC RATING SYSTEM
• IGBC has developed green building rating
programmes to cover commercial, residential,
factory buildings, etc.
• Each rating system divided into different levels of
certification are as follows:
 “Certified” to recognise best practices.
 “Silver” to recognise outstanding performance.
 “Gold" to recognise national excellence.
 “Platinum” to recognise global leadership

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS :
 BUILDING : PUNJAB FOREST COMPLEX,MOHALI
 ARCHITECT : SARBJIT SINGH BAGHA
 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN :SUSTAINABLE
ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN :
 The Punjab Forest Department has constructed a state-of-
the-art “Forest Complex” in a 2 acre plot in Mohali with
all modern amenities.
 The Complex has been designed and constructed in the
form of five aesthetically appealing inter-connected
Towers (RCC structure with attractive Aluminium
Composite Panel / DGU’s of High Performance Glass on
Façade).
 The aerial view of the complex appears in the form of a
Tortoise.
 The 100’ high building has been constructed at a cost of
Rs.61crores (inclusive of interiors, furniture and fixtures).
 It is 8 storey building with covered area of 1,51,385
sq.ft.
Maintaining thermal comfort:

 High Window to wall ratio for maximizing

natural light,
 Large and attractive (open to sky) Central
Courtyard with 40’ high waterfall;
RAIN WATER HARVESTING AT
PUNJAB FOREST COMPLEX, MOHALI
 A storage tank is constructed which is the
part of the underground water tank or
separate tank on the surface. This tank
collects water falling on the building terraces
and the collected water in the storage tank is
utilized for further use in future.
Sensors Tap:
 A traditional tap is turned on wastes a
great deal of energy. In contrast, sensor
taps enable us to keep water at a constant
temperature so we don't need to expend
energy changing the water temperature.
 Sensor taps offer significant water savings
 Traditional taps can use up to 10-15 litres
of water per minute.

Solar Power Plant:
 25Kwp building integrated solar
photovoltaic power plant has been set
up to meet the basic requirement of
electricity in the complex

Water Bodies:
The water bodies with waterfalls
and fountains have been placed in
the central atrium of the complex
for cooling of whole the complex in
the hot and dry period.

 USE OF GREEN RATED CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS:-
• Earthen Materials.
• Wood.
• Bamboo.
• SIPs.
• Insulated Concrete Forms.
• Straw Bale.
• Earth Bags.
• All these help achieve material efficiency. By reducing usage of energy
sources that pollute the environment such as coal, green rated
consrtuction material contribute to keeping the environment clean. In
addition, by reducing the levels of carbon (IV) oxide emitted to the
atmosphere.

Unique Workstations:
 Scientifically designed and fully
equipped unique workstations have
been made for the employees having
comfortable environment, good
ergonomics with sufficient natural
light and air.

 CONCLUSION
 Sensors were being installed to automatically switch off air-
conditioners and lights when there was no occupancy in the
area WHICH WILL HELP IN SAVING ENERGY AND
MAKE BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENT
 The large central courtyard with a huge waterfall would also
result in appreciable natural cooling,
 High Window to wall ratio for maximizing natural light.
 Rain Water Harvesting system at complex also helps to save water
and to store water for the further use in future.
