Difference Between Web of Things and Internet of Things

The document discusses the differences between the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Web of Things (WoT). The IoT involves connecting devices that gather and share data using a common platform and language, but building a global ecosystem is impossible due to a lack of universal protocols. The WoT envisions connecting everyday devices to the web using standard web protocols, reusing existing web infrastructure to simplify integration across different systems and applications. An example is provided of a hotel owner connecting appliances in rooms across properties to remotely monitor and manage them using different device protocols integrated through a common web application.

Internet of Things and Web

of Things
Internet of Things
IOT is the giant network
with connected devices.
These devices gather and
share data about how they
are used and the environment
in which they are operated.
IoT provides the a common
platform to dumb their data
in a common language.
Example
In AC manufacturing industry both the manufacturing machine and
the belt has sensors attach, they continuously send data regarding
the machine health and the production specifics to the manufacturer
to identify the issues beforehand.
Limitation
Unfortunately, building a single global ecosystem of Things
communicating with each other is virtually impossible today. There
is no unique and universal application protocol for the Internet of
Things that can work across the many networking interfaces
available today. In other words the IoT of today is essentially a
collection of isolated Intranets of Things that can’t really interact
with each other.
Web of Things
The Web of Things is a vision inspired from the Internet of Things
where everyday devices and objects, i.e. objects that contain an
Embedded devices or computer, are connected by fully integrating
them to the Web.
Unlike in the many systems that exist for the Internet of things, the
Web of Things is about re-using the Web standards to connect
them quickly expending eco-system of Embedded devices built into
everyday smart objects.
Example
Jonney, owner of a famous hotel chain,
he wants to connect all the appliances
in all the rooms of his hotel. So that he
can monitor and improve the
management from his home in
Bahamas.
To build the smart hotel, electronic
door locks made by the company “A”,
security cameras made by the
company “B” and control application
to manage all made by the “C”

data and services from various devices Connecting heterogeneous devices to the
extremely complex and costly. Web makes the integration across systems
and applications much simpler.

As more everyday objects will be digitally augmented, the next step is to

use the World Wide Web ecosystem and infrastructure to build
applications for the IoT, effectively breaking this ongoing “one device, one
protocol, one app” pattern.
