14ME770 - Finite Element Analysis

The document discusses Finite Element Analysis (FEA). It begins by stating Einstein's quote that if you cannot explain something simply, you do not understand it well. It then provides an overview of FEA, explaining that it is a simulation technique used in engineering to model physical phenomena like structural analysis. FEA works by dividing a complex problem into smaller, simpler parts called finite elements, setting up equations for each, and solving them to obtain a system response. FEA is useful for reducing prototypes and experiments and optimizing designs.

WHAT IS FEA or FEM?
Finite Element Analysis:
The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is the simulation of any given physical
phenomenon such as structural or fluid behaviour of a product/process/system, thermal
transport, wave propagation, electromagnetic wave response, the growth of biological
cells, reaction of chemicals etc using a tool or technique in Numerical Methods called
Finite Element Method (FEM).

Engineers use it to reduce the number of physical prototypes and experiments and
optimize components in their design phase to develop better products, faster.

WHY IS THIS FEA NEEDED?

Advantages of FEA:
• Cost
• Design Cycle time
• No. of Prototypes
• Testing
• Design Optimization

IS THIS FEA REALLY USEFUL?

Disadvantages of FEA:
1. Computational time involved in the solution of a large complex problem is high.

2. FEA is a Numerical Tool. Proper Engineer’s judgment is to be exercised to interpret results.

2. It requires large computer memory to obtain the results.

3. There are certain categories of problems where other methods are more effective, e.g., fluid
problems having boundaries at infinity are better treated by the boundary element method or Finite
Volume Method

4. The Error in input data or round off error in FEA may sometimes leads to erroneous results.

5. FEA just gives only an approximate solution to the problems
