 Coupling is a mechanical device
used to couple the shaft for
transmission of power from
driving shaft to another driving
shaft.
 Thereare two families of
couplings-

1. Rigid coupling
2. Flexible coupling.
 It is a type of coupling which can be used
only when there is precise alignment between
two shafts.

 It cannot be tolerate misalignment between

axes of the shafts.
 Flangecoupling
 Muff Coupling
 Clamp coupling
 It is another type of rigid coupling so all the
conditions are also applicable here like
proper alignment of both the shafts and
connection should not have any kind of
vibrations and jerks.
 Here we use two flanges one is for input shaft
and the other is for the output shaft. The
shafts are joining with the flanges by means
of keys and both the flanges are connected
together by using nut and bolt connections
 Key is responsible for the power
transmission in this coupling. This is used for
high speed applications because it has proper
and tight connection by means of flanges and
nut-bolts
 It has High torque transmitting
capacity
 It is easy to assemble and
dismantle
 It has simple construction and it is
easy to design and manufacture
 It can not tolerate misalignment
between shafts
 It can not used where shocks and
vibrations are present
 It requires some radial space
 A muff coupling is also known as a sleeve or
box coupling. It is a type of rigid coupling. It
consists a sleeve and a key(sunk key) which
is used to join input and output shafts.

 The torque is first transmitted from input

shaft to sleeve through the key and then it is
transmitted from sleeve to output shaft.
 It is simple, it has only two parts a sleeve and
a key
 Since it has no projecting parts hence it is
safe to use
 It has compact construction
 It is cheaper compared to other types of
couplings
 It is difficult to assemble or dismantle
 Since it is a rigid coupling so it cannot
accommodate any misalignment
 Due to absence of flexible elements it can not
absorbs shocks and vibrations
 It requires more axial space compared with
other types of couplings
 It is also known as compression or split muff
coupling. It is a type of rigid coupling. It is
same as muff coupling the only difference is
in clamp coupling sleeve is divided into two
axially symmetric parts. Which are assembled
together to form a coupling.
 It is Easy to assemble and dismantle
 It is easy to remove without axial
displacement of any shaft
 Its diametrical dimensions are small
compared to muff coupling
 Dynamic balancing is difficult hence it is not
suitable for high speed applications
 It is Not suitable for shock loads
 Necessary to provide a guard for safety
 A flexible coupling exists to transmit power
(torque) from one shaft to another; to
compensate for minor amounts of
misalignment; and, in certain cases, to
provide protective functions such as vibration
dampening or acting as a “fuse” in the case of
torque overloads.
 Jaw Couplings
 Sleeve Coupling
 The jaw coupling is a material flexing
coupling that transmits torque thru
compression of an elastomeric spider insert
placed between two intermeshing jaws.
 High torque capabilities
 Different material choices for the spider allow
the user to choose torsional stiffness
 Easy installation in blind or difficult
installations
 Rugged, can function well in harsh
environments
 Replaceable, inexpensive wear element
 Relatively high reactive forces exerted on
support bearings, proportional to
misalignment
 Accommodates relatively small
misalignments, considering large size of
couplings
 The sleeve coupling transmits low to medium
torque between connected equipment in
shear through an elastomeric insert with male
splines that mate with female hub
splines. The insert material is typically EPDM,
Neoprene or Hytrel and the insert can be a
one or two piece design.
 It has a bore is finished to the required
tolerance based on the shaft size.

 Two threaded holes are provided in order to

lock the coupling in position.
