INTRODUCTION

A microstrip band pass filter is a two port network used to

control the frequency response at a certain point in a
microstrip system by providing transmission at frequencies
within the passband of the filter and attenuation in the
stopband of the filter. Typical frequency responses
include low pass ,high pass, bandpass and band reject
characteristics. Applications can be found in virtually any
type of microstrip communication, radar or test and
measurement system.
Types Of Filters

The four primary types of filters include:

 Low-pass filter.
 High-pass filter.
 Band-pass filter.
 Notch filter (or the band-reject or band-stop filter).
Design of Microstrip line (ML)

 The evaluation of microstrip lines began in 1952.

 It can be fabricated by photolithographic processes and is easily integrated with
other passive and active circuits.
 The microstrip line is transmission line geometry with consists of a single
conducting strip of width (W) and of thickness (t) on the top side of a dielectric
substrate of thickness (h) and of relative permittivity (εr) and also a single ground
plane on the opposite side of dielectric substrate.
Choice of Substrate

It is mainly depends on the following parameters like

 Size

 Higher-order modes

 Surface wave effects

 Implementations-coupling, line/spacing tolerances,

 Dielectric loss

 Temperature stability

 Power handling-dielectric strength (breakdown), thermal conductivity

Bandpass Filter

Band Pass Filters can be used to isolate or filter out certain frequencies that lie
within a particular band or range of frequencies. The cut-off frequency or ƒc
point in a simple RC passive filterLayout Of The
can be Filter
accurately controlled using just a
single resistor in series with a non-polarized capacitor, and depending upon
which way around they are connected, we have seen that either a Low Pass
or a High Pass filter is obtained.
By connecting or “cascading” together a single Low Pass Filter circuit with
a High Pass Filter circuit, we can produce another type of passive RC filter
that passes a selected range or “band” of frequencies that can be either
narrow or wide while attenuating all those outside of this range. This new type
of passive filter arrangement produces a frequency selective filter known
commonly as a Band Pass Filter or BPF for short.
MICROSTRIP BANDPASS FILTER DESIGN-1

It has a dielectric
constant of 2.2 and a
thickness of 0.254 mm.
The total length of the
designed filter is 7.9 mm
or about three quarters of
wavelength at the center
frequency of the
specified passband at 20
GHz.
S-Parameter Magnitude in dB
Observation:

 A compact wideband microstrip BPF prototype with good out-of-band

performance has been proposed and designed using the folded multiple-
mode resonator filter . A wide passband of about 106.5% fractional
bandwidth is obtained at 20 GHz, which can be used to cover the band
from 9.6 to 31.5 GHz.By making effective use of transmission zeros
generated by low-impedance line, lower/upper stopbands have been
widened and deepened with sharpened roll-off skirts. In addition, the
overall length of the constituted filter is only about three-quarter
wavelength at the center operating frequency.
MICROSTRIP BANDPASS FILTER DESIGN-2

W1 = 2.9 mm, W2 = 0.4 mm, W3 = 1

mm, W4 = 1.4 mm, W5 =0.4 mm, W6
= 0.6 mm, W7 = 2 mm, L1 = 7 mm, L2
= 7.3 mm,L3 = 4.2 mm, L4 = 16.6
mm, L5 = 4.4 mm, L6 = 3 mm, L7 =
3.5 mm, L8 = 5.1 mm, g = 0.2 mm.
The total area of the proposed filter
is 29 × 18.4 mm2, which
corresponds to a size of 0.25l ×0.16l.
The substrate used here is Duroid
5880 (1r ¼ 2.2, thickness ¼0.7874
mm).
S-Parameter Magnitude in dB
Observation:

 A new microstrip dual-mode dual-band bandpass filter is proposed.

One sample filter with two passbands located at 1.8 and 2.4 GHz
has been designed and measured for demonstration. Results
indicate that the proposed filter has the properties of compact
size, low passband insertion loss and high selectivity. With all these
good features, the proposed filter is applicable for modern wireless
communication system.
Advantages And Disadvantages Of
Microstrip Based Bandpass Filters

Advantage: ML has a major fabrication advantage of

interconnections and adjustments over the strip line.

Disadvantages: The main disadvantages of the general ML

are low Q-factor, radiation, electromagnetic interference,
dispersion, and environmental problems [19]. The general ML is
open to the air, while in practice, it is desirable to have
circuits covered to protect them from the environment, as
well as to prevent radiation and electromagnetic
interference (EMI).
Conclusion 

A filtering microstrip antenna is proposed. The design

process is based on filter synthesis approach. Thus, the
structure combines filtering and radiating functions
simultaneously. The proposed structure exhibits good
out-of-band gain suppression, flat in-band gain, and
good skirt selectivity at the band edges. The proposed
structure can help to reduce the size and cost of the
communication system by combining two components
into one.
