Lec 01 - Introduction To HCI

The document provides an introduction to human-computer interaction (HCI). It recommends textbooks on HCI and outlines lecture topics including the definition of HCI and its core disciplines. HCI is described as a multidisciplinary field focusing on the design of computer technology and the interaction between humans and computers. The goals of HCI are to produce usable and functional machines and achieve efficient, effective, and safe interaction by understanding how people use technology and putting people first.

INTRODUCTION TO

HCI
HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION
RECOMMENDED RESOURCES

• Text book
• Human Computer Interaction, Alan Dix et al., 3rd edition, Pearson Education,
• Other
• Designing Interactive Systems: A comprehensive guide to HCI, UX and interaction
design, D. Benyon, 3rd edition, Pearson Education, 2013.
• Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction,
B. Shneiderman et al., 5th edition, Pearson Education, 2009.
• The essence of human computer interaction, C. Faulkner, 1st Ed.
• The design of everyday things, D. Norman, 2nd Ed.
LECTURE OUTLINES
• Word HCI
• Human and Computers
• 21st Century
• Why the Need of HCI comes?
• Rise and History of HCI
• Definition of HCI
• Disciplines in HCI
• Goals of HCI
WORD HCI

Consists of three words

• Human: Persons or Human Using the Computers/ Machines

• Computer : it is a machine which run the system

• Interaction: it is the interface that represents the system with which the
humans are interacting.
HUMAN

• Complex
• Intelligent
• Animate
• Free will
• Range of Emotions
• Make Mistakes
COMPUTERS

• Dumb
• Unintelligent
• Unanimated
• Only do, when user told to do
HCI & SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

• Software Engineering focuses on the internal working of the software

• HCI concerned with the external working of the software
21ST CENTURY
• In the past 30 years technology became advanced and almost everything and every
person in contact with computers, if we look around.
For Example
• ATM
• Cell phones
• Remote control
• Ticketing machine
• Calculator
• Watch
• Photocopier
• Bank
WHY THE NEED OF HCI COMES?
• Computer 1st appeared in 1950s it was cumbersome to use and time consuming
Because of some reasons.
• Large Size i.e. 30 ton 1800 square feet
• Expensive Machines
• Technical Expert Need for Use
• Lay man unable to use machines
ALARM CLOCK
DOS TIME
WHY STUDY HCI – SOFTWARE PERSPECTIVE
SMART PHONE ALARM
DON NORMAN’S EXAMPLE
• Main Point: no one reads
manuals, so things should
be designed so that
manuals are not needed

• BTW what is wrong with the

kettle on the book cover?
DON NORMAN’S DOOR EXAMPLE

A plate naturally says “ push me” and a handle naturally

says “pull me “
DON NORMAN’S DOOR EXAMPLE

When Don Norman’s

advice is not followed
THE SPEEDY RISE OF HCI

• Coming of PC in the Market

• GUI Interface
HISTORY

• It is academic discipline most of us think of UI Designs

• It’s a New Discipline until mid to the late 1970s this discipline wasn’t important.
• In the early only few people has access to computers i.e. Technical Peoples.
• Also not necessary how these people interact with Machines/Computers
• They just made things whatever they needed themselves.
• With the Dawn PC Came need of HCI
COGNITIVE SCIENCES

• The field of science concerned with cognition; psychology ,linguistics, computer

science , neuroscience and philosophy of mind.
ENGINEERING

• Also known as “cognitive engineering e.g. building things that work with
Human thoughts.
• Engineering mean applying the scientific knowledge to practical problems
DOCUMENTATION

• Important to recognize the challenge for the developments

• Provide the solutions for the challenge
• Share the solutions with other professional of the field in the world
• John M. Carroll Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at
the Pennsylvania State University says that the discipline of Human
Computer Interaction was “emerged” in 1980 as all these separate
disciplines began to realign around a single objective; making
computing easier for the masses / People.
HCI DEFINITION
• It is a multidisciplinary field of study
• Focusing on the design of computer technology and, in particular, the
interaction between humans (the users) and computers. While initially
concerned with computers, HCI has since expanded to cover almost all
forms of information technology design.
Of User Interfaces
DISCIPLINES IN HCI?

An Academic Discipline
• Studying People interacting with the (computers) Technology
A Design Discipline
• Design interface for systems involving people and technology
DESIGN - THREE ‘USE’ WORDS

• Useful
- Functional, does things
• Usable
- Easy to do things ,does the right things, enjoyable and user
experience
• Used
- Attractive, Available and acceptable to organizations
GOOD DESIGNS

• Good Designs Brings People Joy

• It helps People do things
• It connects people
• Good interface better impacts on individuals and society
BAD DESIGNS
• Create Complexities
• Frustrated the users
• Confusing
• Slow
• Waste time
For Example
-Trying to set your digital Camera and it takes 10 minutes every day
Pakistan Population 197 million
1,970,000 * 10 = 19,700,000 minutes/ day
In the modern world a famous saying “Time is Money”
GOAL OF HCI
To produce usable and functional machines
• Understand the factors that determine how people use technology
• Develop tools and techniques to enable building suitable systems
• Achieve efficient, effective, and safe interaction
• Put people first
